Beltangady: 19-year-old girl's body found in well under suspicious circumstances

Daijiworld Media Network – Beltangady (SP)

Beltangady, Jul 29: The body of Shobhita (19), a second year degree student of Punjalakatte government first grade college was found floating in a well in the neighbourhood of her home on the night of Sunday July 27. Shobhita, daughter of Santappa Poojary from Adarsh Nagar in Belalu village, reportedly had left home after telling her mother that she would return after watching television programme in a neighbouring house.

The locals point out that the accident theory is difficult to accept because of several inadequacies in the case.

Shobhita had left home at around 6.30 pm for watching television programme. She was good at studies and was popular in the college because of decent behaviour. When she visited a nearby house for the above purpose, as her own house has no electricity supply, and the family members depend on kerosene lamp for lighting, a old lady was alone in that house. After watching television, she is said to have come out, and asked the lady whether she had a particular flower plant she wanted to have, before heading home. The lady was under the impression that the girl had returned home, but was shocked to learn later that she had died within minutes after watching televison.

On the basis of a complaint filed by Keshava Poojary, brother of Shobhita, a case was registered by the policemen of the town station. The complaint suspects that the student would have slipped and fallen into the well accidentally.

Poojary said in his complaint that the family went in search of the girl, as she did not return after watching television programmes. Her body was found floating in the well of a house belonging to a neighbour named Sanjeeva Acharya. Although it is suspected that she would have slipped and fallen into the well, there are some who argue otherwise.

The family members were surprised at the fact that the girl' body was floating in water, although they reached the spot within a short time after her death. Secondly, those who drown normally consume lot of water, but in this case, no water was found in Shobhita's stomach. Moreover, the well in which the girl's body was found, is located some distance away from the path between the two houses. After the villagers expressed suspicion, the policemen questioned a person from the village, but let him go after being unable to find any clue about his possible involvement in the girl's death.

Postmortem was conducted at Mangalore.

Sorry to hear a young, promising life is lost. My sympathies.
According to news report, she left her house at 6.30 p.m. (I assume this was her normal practice). However, the well in which her body was found, is located some distance away from the (normal) path between the two houses and ‘NO water was found in Shobhita's stomach.’ I wonder at what time the TV program she was watching got over and she left for her house? It may be assumed that she was dead before she hit the water in the well as ‘no water was found in her stomach’ as per postmortem report. (capitals used to stress a point).

When leaving home she asked old lady ' any particular flower plant she wanted to have.'. Unless there was a discussion about flower plants why suddenly she would ask this question why leaving the house after watching the TV?. Someone has planned something and uted the plan.

I studies in Govt. College Punjalkatte in 1984. From the 8th Std. till HSC. We used to enjoy. We all girls used to walk 7 to 15 KMs one time !!!!

News says she always goes to that old lady's house to watch TV. That means she is very much sure that there is a well and she had been going all these days. Not that she went first time.

Some culprits are there behind this episode. Belthangady Taluka's name is spoiled from the case of Soumya's murder. God save the Girls. Amen.

She must disclosed to her friends that she goes every evening to watch TV. Question her classmates also. You never know the vengeance since she was best student behaviourwise and in studies also.

what pains me is "no electricity, no TV at home".. good in studies... went to neighbourhood for watching tv.. which is all similar to me, 20 years ago!!... still the same conditions in villages and interiors is shocking.... however, we were all safe 20 yrs ago.. no much atrocities on women, which is further shocking these days..

there is more to what meets the eye.. but like saujanya, ratna, this case will also be derailed and asking for inuiry is waste of time!!! ... may the soul rest in peace and only request GOD, not to make her a girl in indian , in her next life!! we are hnakless society!

By immediate effect all Borewells as well as Wells should be closed immediately.
Satan even not giving anybody a chance to think twice about there life.
It's now become 'craze' amongst youngsters to commit suicide without any solid reason.
Do they achieve any goal..Wants take re-birth several times to become 'good' to attain 'Moksha'.
Nobody ever can escape from it from the life circle created by Brahma.
Better face the society and live the life whatever store for you...only a last solution.
Before attempting to suicide at least visit nearby hospital once to see the situation of ailing patients. Latter on things changed automatically.
