Mangalore: 17-year-old Andrea Patrao dies in accident at Urwa Store

Mangalore, Jul 30: In a tragic incident, a 17-year-old girl was killed after a lorry ran over her at Urwa Store junction here on Wednesday July 30.

The deceased, Andrea Patrao (17) was the daughter of Alwyn Patrao, vice-president of Mangalore Catholic Cooperative (MCC) Bank.

It is said that Andrea was going towards Kulur with a friend and was riding pillion in his bike. When another bike came in their way, her friend applied sudden brakes due to which Andrea lost balance and fell on to the road. A cement mixer truck that was behind them ran over her.

The friend, who was unhurt, rushed Andrea to the hospital, but she had already breathed her last by then.

Andrea was a first year BCom student of St Aloysius College.

West traffic police have registered a case.

    plz youngsters go slow in road,maximum of accidents happen due to over speed.plz go slow.at least if you ride slow you can control your vehicle.tie a good helmet.helmet is not for purpose of avoiding police.it is for our safe where it will resist half the force of head hitting road.guys dnt ride and experiment your riding skill in public roads.because what you see on tv in professional racing that tracks are designed only for racing and also bikes are 1000 cc which are having a good tyres and grip,it is not like our 100 Or 200 cc bikes which fly for air.think properly drive slowly at least you can save your life and also others valuable life.sorry for that girls parents.let god give them strength to control their tears.

    First of all my heartfelt sympathies to Mr Patrao and family. I am sure nothing can console him at this juncture except the divine strength and grace from above. I have been a customer of Mr. Patrao for last 5 months and was with him that noon for settling my bills. Neither of us had any clue about what was in store that evening.
    Coming to the design of present day bike-seats, pillion seat is like a slide. I feel that the entire seat should be at the same level (like conventional) if the rider should have proper control of his vehicle. Applying the brakes suddenly does happen sometimes, but normally it will have a thrust on rider and he in turn will have his grip on handle to control the situation. Recently a friend of mine asked me to sit pillion on his modern bike with a modern seat and I made a resolution not to sit on such bikes again (At this point I must mention that I too was riding bikes and scooters since my childhood for over 30 yrs). Technology should take us forward not backward. Let this little angel's death be an eye opener to all concerned.

    You are absolutely right the pillion seats of modern bikes are designed for style and not for safety. In fact I am of the opinion that Pillion riding must be banned on all highways, I have seen children on pillion seat sleeping on high speed bikes.

    When i received the news from Austine i was dumbstruck...i could not have received worse news than the news of of the demise of our Andrea.I have no words to console you dear Prabha, Alwyn n Bennybai and the members of the Patrao family, at this hour of grief.
