Udupi, Aug 21: The forester and staff of Padubidri forest department have arrested one person for smuggling of sandalwood at near mosque at Shirva here on Sunday August 20.

The arrested has been identified as Ashraf.  He was smuggling sandalwood on a rickshaw from Mattar near Shirva when he was stopped and arrested near the mosque.  The forest department staff also seized 23 kilograms of sandalwood and the rickshaw from him.  The total worth of the seized sandalwood is estimated at Rs 45,000.

However, Ashraf's accomplice Amiruddin managed to escape during the raid.  The case has now bee shifted to Shirva police station for investigation.
