Puttur, Aug 22: A group of miscreants set fire to an illegal arrack shop situated near Hyrandi school in Narimogru here on Monday August 21 night.

This particular arrack shop was functioning despite opposition from locals for long.  Even on Monday afternoon, a lot of persons led by local Stri Shakti SHGs had staged a demonstration asking the administration to vacate the arrack shop from the area.  While the shop did not possess any license, it was close to the school, which clearly indicated that it was against norms.

But the shop went on with the business on Monday evening too.  But it is said that some unidentified men set arrack shop on fire in the late night on Monday.

The sources said that there are nearly 100 arrack shops in the taluk which are running illegally.  Despite several protests and demonstrations, the administration has not taken any steps in banning them.  The incident on Monday might have worked as a warning to all these illegal shops.
