Mangalore, Aug 23: Women are not safe in this district.  Perhaps this statement could have been refuted a couple of years ago, but not now.  Day-by-day the environment in the district is becoming hostile to the fair sex.  Dowry harassment cases, sexual assaults in offices and houses, rape cases, eve-teasing are increasing by every passing day.  Somewhat animalism is creeping deep into the non-violent fabric of the district.

This is what could be said of this rape attempt on a twelve-year-old girl by her neighbour.  The incident took place at Bagambila near Kotekar of Ullal here on Monday August 21.  One Girish (28) lured his neighbouring 12-year-old girl and took her to his house when no one was in both houses.

Once in his house, he is said to have forced her for physical relationship.  When the girl protested this, he forced her to take out her clothes. At this point, the girl shouted for help.  Frightened by this, Girish let her go home.

The girl however, did not reveal this to her parents on the same day.  But she brought this to the notice of her mother on Tuesday August 22.  Immediately, her mother filed a case with the Ullal police in this regard.  The police are investigating the case.
