J R Lobo appeals CM to consider holiday on Sep 8

Daijiworld Media Network- Mangalore

Mangalore, Aug 19: Mangalore South MLA J R Lobo has urged Chief Minister Siddaramaih to declare a holiday on September 8, since the Catholic community celebrates the sacred Nativity feast, which is the birthday of Mother Mary.

Since there are a large number of Catholics residing in the coastal regions of DK and Udupi districts, Lobo has made this special appeal based on demands from various leaders of the Catholic community.

"It is a family festival; a holiday for the public will help everyone celebrate the day with their families," J R Lobo requested Siddaramaih.

Lobo specified that the holiday should be declared in the coastal districts while in other districts it can be optional.

I agree 100%. If we government announce holiday for each and every family festivals of every relegions, then working days will be 10 -15 only. By the by what about KAUP MAARI POOJA... its celebrated in kaup and around udupi. I think Pramod Madwaraj and Sorake should request for the holiday.

I agree with Mr John R Lobo..and Mr Shenava.. I forgot to add Sick Leave 10 , Casual Leave 12 and Earned Leave 30 per year all together it will b 158 holidays and only 207 working days. what we can do, give 20 holiday per year a employee an when he required he can use it. for a example ..Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Janis can avail the holiday for their respective festivals and rest of the people can work. Only for the National Holidays it will be Holiday for all. This Idea may not agree but it will Progress the Nation ..Ijjinda indu jathigonji Raje korunda Kali Rajene Ippu.

No holidays please, I am a Christian and I can manage well on September 8 th without a holiday, this is what we have done in the past. Now everyone has vehicles, not like earlier days, we used to walk in the rain & attend Mass & celebrate the feast in a good humour. Now there are vehicles, there are frequent buses & there is mass at convenient time, so please no to holiday. Why Congress leaders can't think beyond these issues? Seems they like to create more & more problems between communities. Please think how can you develop your constituency rather than raising these issues. In the past also there is a holiday on 8th for Christian schools. Let it be as it is. Please don't create problems, we have enough problems in the Country & in the state.

I fully support and agree with your views. Mr. Lobo's 1.5 year term is already lapsed and the result is in front of us all. Cutting ribbons, attending facilitations and parties went with one year and now thinking on additional and more holidays in the name of festivals. It seems no other agendas or priorities for Mr. Lobo. JAI HO!!

Have gone through each and every comment of our dear readers. Fantastic comments.

It is unanimously agreed that in these times, WE DO NOT NEED ANOTHER PUBLIC HOLIDAY as requested by Lobo MLA. Honoring Mother Mary can be done by hard work.

Look back and see the achievements over the last year. Pathetic and poor and nothing is moving. And now the new public holiday. Vow.

Roads are in bad unmotorable conditions, cannot walk as footpaths are not there or having stones. Garbage is overflowing and drains are stinking.

One big request, that on this day, Our MLAs spend time and clear up as much as we can the mess that is around us. Then we can safely say, our Mother Mary will bless us.

Hard work and keeping no work for tomorrow should be our motto. Just cutting ribbons, lighting lamps, being there in every photo for flat inauguration, is not work. Work is proving jobs done in record time.

Prime Sevak is working 18 hours day after day to clean our country of the mess left by earlier party and at this time Karnataka MLAs / CMs wanting public holiday. Long Live our Karnataka !!! Jai ho

    Dear all,

this is nothing but an eye-wash and a kidding demand. The September 8th festival is a century old especially for coastal region like Onam in Kerala and Ugadi in Karnataka but The Chrstian Community again its spiritual leaders were not serious and try to convince any of the Governments for the last 67 years whether it is Congress or BJP. Again as someone rightly pointed out the EC is free to elections on Good Friday and on Maundy Thursdays which are most sacred days for Christians, then do you ever think of Government declaring holiday on 8th of September after all it is just a festival of one of the regions of a State. Mr. J R Lobo need to think and worry on more important issues of his constituency!!

Festivals do spice up our lives , its more precious than productivity of a nation as a whole. Recent proposals by some MNC to set only 4 or 5 working days a week is applaud-able. Sept 8 nativity feast is very special and close to ' non violence' concept of CHRIST. Traditionally very old feast along konkan region and people only prepare vegetarian food. As its a major festival , why not make it as FEAST HOLIDAY.

Therefore instead of this holiday our MLA's should do some constructive work. Do away from moral policing crowd, do away from antisocial elements, bring about change in police force (people friendly) maintain clean city, health environment so many issues. we have.

I fully agree to your comments. Having worked across 3 continents I think this is a stupid request. Even in a place like Kuwait we have employers letting off Christian and Hindu staff go half day, or even day off for Easter and Diwali and we a secular india talk of more holidays. Our productivity is pathetic and this is very evident in the way our bureaucracy operates. A person like our MLA who was part of this cycle was chosen as he was supposedly different. Today we are seeing a different picture. At the same time I think we would love to know who are the catholic leaders who asked for a public holiday. I assume most of them are business owners and can lock their offices per their own prerogative as none others remain in Mangalore due to want of career options. check on ways of increasing productivity, give deadlines for developmental works to be done, develop a vision for a constituency and then work towards it.

Although I understand that Lobo has made the request on behalf of community leaders, one must clearly know that we are a nation of very poor productivity due to the number of official holidays, annual vaction, emergencies likes Bandhs, strikes, protests, sick leave etc., which many of our fellow readers have already voiced below.

Mr.Lobo, on one hand you talk about making Mangalore smart city, second only to Bangalore, and to compete with Shanghai, Singapore etc., but you clearly demonstrate that you are far behind in uting any plans that may help Coastal region achieve these goals.

People have been already questioning your achievements since you became a MLA.

Now those who think, it must be a holiday on 8th Sept., I would suggest the following :

    (A) Employers Christians/non-Christians, may consider giving a day off for their Catholic employees.

    (B) Those who think it is a must to have a holiday, may deduct one day from their annual vacation etc., so the rest can work for the day.

    (C) Catholic institutions may a day off for all or Catholic employees at their own discretion.

Mr.Lobo, we need progress, not a nation of lazy people.

    J. R. Lobo is cheapening the image of Christians in the eyes of the world. We elected you to develop our city, not to ask for holidays. There are thousands of problems plaguing the city from corruption to bad roads to lack of basic amenities to illiteracy to poverty to lack of civic sense. The Christian community has umpteen facilities as of now and it can fend for itself. This kind of cheap gimmicks wouldn’t help Christians in any way. Mr. MLA, we elected you because you belonged to our community, but that does not mean that you should play the dirty trick of minority appeasement. We would take great pride if you work for the welfare of the needy, irrespective of their caste and creed. Please stop playing dirty politics.

surely he himself knows asking for public holiday on sep 8 is unjustified..

Mr. Lobo we thought you are man with new thoughts. surprising you trying to take the district backwards. come on sir see the majority comments. who want leave. please concentrate on development otherwise you will be sent back home neatly packed in the next election.we have lot hopes on you. dont disappoint us. holiday is not our need at this hour. its only development so the we and our future genartaions leave in peace. these kind of communal appeasement will further divide the people.try to generate employment. once their are opportunities of employment all these communal disturbances happening in the district will vanish.please work towards that.

Mr.Lobo is short of new ideas and statements. He still thinks he is a bureaucrat and waits for a holiday. This is what happens when you work for a particular system for decades and then suffer from stockholm syndrome.

I do not know why JR lobo talks like ileterate...

India is already full of holidays and if possible all holidays need to be stopped except few those are really important like Christmas, Eid Al Firt, Deepavali, Navarathri... etc.

Those celebrate Monthi fest can avail optional holiday (restricted holiday). Otherwise optional holiday gets lapsed by the end of the year.

I think our MLA is wasting our time and his as well.
He has been elected to look for the overall development of the constituency. Somehow even after one year of getting elected our MLA saab seems to be unaware of urgent issues bothering our city/constituency. Garbage menace, footpath issues, filthy market places, water stagnation, uncontrolled driving by buses etc should have been dealt by now. Only talks about tourism all the time, but how the tourist will come to the city if city lacks basic infrastructures? Asking for holiday for a particular community feast by a elected representative is unjustified. Please concentrate on development/hygiene/infrastructure related issues

No. Mr Jr lobo, we don't need a holiday for 8th of Sept. If we want one we will take leave. Instead please get better infrastructure to mangalore, cause that is why you were voted in and not for appeasement of religious sentiments.

I for one believe that this feast is celebrated majorly in Mangalore and surrounding areas. In light of this it would be unjustified to ask for a public holiday.

Option1. Most Christian schools and businesses already provide a day off to their staff to celebrate the same. On the other hand let us also understand that majority of families wait for ALL family members to be in Mangalore for the celebration and given the lesser number of opportunities for career opportunities most people are moving to Metros, Middle-East and or westward. So does having a holiday really make a difference?

Option 2. If people really so desire, there is a concept of a casual leave which I believe people should use rather that just look for one more holiday. I guess it is time that we look beyond pure vote-banks and think in a rational way.

Option 3. Rather than ask for a public holiday, Amend public holiday regulations and Create an optional holiday that each individual employed in any firm public or private can take once in a year for celebrating a religious festival. This would clearly showcase our secular DNA rather than focus on one religion or the other and neglect the others.

Can we rather look at overall development? how many industries have we managed to invite or relocate to the Mangalore area? how many new jobs have been created? How many unemployed youth have been given an opportunity to become entrepreneurs? how many girls and women have been given the confidence and courage to live life independently with no disrespect or fear from society?

Instead of reducing the holidays, you are asking to increase. Please ask for development in the district. Our district is in very bad condition, we need proper infrastructure.

Government and Public sector should be granted with 2 extra casual leaves for the current quota. So the people can avail to their respective feasts or vocations, instead of making it a mandatory holiday. Because only Catholics are celebrating this feast in general and most of the catholic institutions any way are closed. It never effected since decades and will not now. Mr. Lobo I think you should concentrate on mass developments for all instead of this issue.

Things work differently in India than in other parts of the world. Most of the public holidays, business establishments remain open and offs are taken when individual requires.

I feel it is already a holiday on Sept 8th for Christians as all educational institutions run by Christians and businesses remain closed that day. The concentration of Christians is more only in certain pockets of Karnataka and not everywhere. For those who work, nobody objects taking a day off on that particular day. Hence it is not necessary to appeal for a separate day of holiday.

N About Nativity feast being a catholic I would like to tell u that it is only celebrated in Coastal Karnataka ..... For those who work, a holiday is meant to be spent with family, to celebrate their culture. It bonds the elders and the children in the family, and is a definite way of learning the tradition.

In India, different communities are deprived of this privilege. People are at home for no reason, with nothing to do on certain holidays and when they desperately need one to celebrate, it is a working day. Some may say - apply leave. That is only a quick fix.

May be government should some of the festival holidays as optional holidays, which must be consumed during the year. Different communities have the choice of availing, at their need.

It is a genuine appeal. It is the most meaningful celebration among the Catholic Magaloreans. It has to do with nature, harvest, family, vegetarianism, worship, flowers, children, Mariamma and her birthday. It can be compared to Deepavali. It is a festival filled with traditions, meaning and grace and I am sure CM will if explained well the significance of the festival will the preferential holiday.
