Karkala, Aug 23: "We should keep our house and surrounding clean; the way we wash the dirt of our bodies. When our environment becomes clean, the mind will also be clean," said Rayappa, Chief Municipality council official of Karkala.

He was speaking as the chief guest in a programme on clean environment and healthy life held at the Sundara Puranika Memorial High School under the aegis of Hosasanje Balaga.

"Thousands of people have shed their blood and sacrificed their lives for the freedom of our country. However, we have reached a stage where we are not even willing to perspire for the country. We speak about beautiful cities but wait for the government employees to sweep our surroundings. This is the irony," he said expressing his dissatisfaction.

Another chief guest, Karkala Youth Congress Secretary Vignesh Kini spoke, "If there is awareness among citizens, the problem of trash is not big. Every person, house and area can segregate the waste. Everybody should understand their responsibility and act accordingly."

School development committee president Vijayaraja Shetty, environment expert Dr Bharathesh, member of town municipal council Prakash Rao, journalist K Padmakar Bhat and Hosasanje Balaga president R Devaraya Prabhu were present.

Headmaster welcomed, Nisarga compered while Poornesh proposed the vote of thanks.
