Mangalore: Free treatment every Tuesday for patients with mental disorders

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (DV)

Mangalore, Aug 25: “Every Tuesday, compulsorily in all district and taluk hospitals, primary health centres and community centres, doctors will treat patients with mental disorders for free. Doctors will also provide essential medicines and government medical college psychiatrists will visit the taluk centre or primary health centres to treat patients with mental disorders as per the assignment given by their HOD,” said state minister U T Khadar.

He was addressing the press meet at Circuit House on Monday August 25.

Khadar also said that doctors will be paid for this job and they will be given leave on that day.

“Making slight changes in treatment of rape victims under the Nirbhaya guidelines, the state government, giving importance to the treatment of rape victims has decided to reserve one bed in the district hospital ICU for the treatment of rape victims. All treatment will be provided there. It will be safe for the victim. The state government will write to the union government in this regard,” he said.

“The government has planned to start a mental treatment center in district hospitals and later, in the second phase, it will emphasize on day care centers. Without treatment centers, day care centers will not function effectively. Earlier, these were started but due to the shortage of psychiatrists, they were stopped,” added Khadar.

Commenting on the by-elections, he said that due to good governance provided by the Siddaramaiah government people have opted for the Congress in two constituencies. “Even in Shimoga, we lost by a small margin,” he added.

On this occasion, MLC Ivan D’Souza, MLA J R Lobo, and mayor Mahabala Maarla were present.

Jossey...Feeling bad for your state of mind. I agree Khader is doing well but want to ask all the Congress supporters in this forum. When ministers were judged based on their education qualification to serve their role in ministry why you people dint ask if Khader has medical graduation to serve as health minister.

A very good imitative. Health care is of primary importance and I am glad that under the scheme patients with mental disorders will receive free treatments at all hospitals on a designated day viz Tuesday.

This is an initial step to providing free health care to senior citizens. Hope Karnataka will take this step in the right direction.

Good Initiative sir. But poor mental disorder patients should be given free treatment in government hospitals all the time. We have seen / heard these patients are chained, thrown in dark rooms by their families. Now it is Governments duty to Identify and treat these people.

Good initiative. But I feel EVERY hospital should provide free treatment to people with psychiatric disorders EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK - and public should join hands if hospitals need financial assistance in this regard. After all, when God has saved us from the misery of psychiatric illness, it is our duty to comfort and minimise the agony of the patients and their families.
