Kasargod, Sep 2: A couple travelling by Jayanti Janata Express train was robbed of 15 sovereigns of gold after presumably having been sprayed with some unaesthetic drug on the night of Sunday August 31. The victims of this robbery were Varghese (74) and his wife, Annie (67), from Neerottipuram in Alappuzha Thalavadi in the state.
The couple was travelling by Jayanti Janata Express from Mumbai to Thiruvalla in Pattanamthitta district. A group of youth who boarded their compartment in a railway station in Andhra Pradesh were seated next to the couple, it is said. Both of them lost consciousness sometime later. When the train reached Chengannur next morning, Verghese, who regaid consciousness found that Annie had gone missing.
In the meanwhile, Annie, who was in a semiconscious state, was helped to disembark from the train at Mavelikkara station and the railway officials passed on this information to Verghese. The couple found later that 15 sovereigns of gold placed in the vanity bag of Annie was
stolen.
With the help of Railway Protection Force staff, Annie was brought to Thiruvalla later, where the railway police registered a case. The policemen suspect that the gang of youth had sprayed some drug on the faces of the couple before going ahead with their task of robbing the elderly after they slipped into a state of unconsciousness.
