Teacher hits student with stick – Childline members swing into action

Daijiworld Media Network – Beltangady (SP)

Beltangady, Sep 3: After getting complaint that a teacher of higher primary school at Nittade village in the school had hit a student with stick, a Childline team visited the school on Tuesday September 2 to gather details.

A teacher from the school who teaches Hindi reportedly hit the hand of a student sleeping on his desk with a stick on August 20. It is said that the student was suffering from headache then and hence was resting. The student, who was injured in his hand, after coming to know during the Children's Parliament programme held in the town on August 22 that children can seek help from Childline, he had called this number. The Childline had transferred the complaint to Child Welfare Committee.

It is said that immediately after coming to know that a complaint was filed against the teacaher concerned, the teachers and school development and monitoring committee (SDMC) president reportedly brought pressure on the family of the boy to withdraw the complaint. Childline team and education department officials visited the school in this backdrop.

The visiting team however, could not meet either the accused teacher or the headmistress. The headmistress had left a note that she was visiting the office of the block education office. When called, this office informed that she had already left. She could not be contacted on phone too. The team also did not get the desired level of support from SDMC office bearers. The visiting team felt lack of coordination between teachers and SDMC office bearers.

The team then visited the home of the boy, where the student's mother stated that a SDMC member had been calling her and threatening her to withdraw this case. The team wants to pursue the case further after gathering all the details.

What kind of the teacher is! Why not teacher check him what happened? Teachers means person who have patience to teach, love kind , understanding physically and mentally his student. all students don't have same mentality. yes without teaching talent you can't teach the student in right way. some are doing teacher training because there is good scope and these teachers are very struggle to teach and take others revenge on their student in the class.

All idiots who say beating is allowed should be beaten for all the silly reasons like throwing garbage on the road,Pee in the open, Driving offences for any accidents while driving, jumping signal and specially the crazy Bus drivers of Mangalore PVT buses.
For me no one has a right to beat anyone except in police custody for criminal offences.

to all readers who wrote against the teacher, please make a note. this is the clear reason for having such a screwed up society in which we are leaving. It's the teachers who were mentoring students more than parents and primary reason for all our success. But once the governance restricted teachers from punishing the students, there started the problem. No scare, no fear, knowing they can screw back the teacher the students community ( whom we refer as youth ) have taken everything granted. Completely shifted their focus all other stupid activities... may one or 2 teachers here and there are the culprits and we blamed whole teacher community and made all possible restrictions.... I am telling you no teacher can bear a student sleeping in the class. if any such disorder in health he should stay back. How can you expect a teacher to take call while students are sleeping...

Respect to teachers is a must.At the same time teachers also respect them as children ,not as their Anger to get rid off on them.when children do wrong correct them not with their weapons.we had a headmaster who didnt have a stock, but his appearence itself brought respect. There are teachers who really beat children which in end effect died specially in Nord as we often read.In such cases a child helpline is naturally helpfull .otherwise such teachers will not learn that they are children and beat.I still remember my Primary School maths teacher who used to give a closed faust hit on the back which I never Forget and his naga betha.why did the School headmaster and other teachers had to call this Boys home to withdraw the charges?Anyway now teachers know they cant beat the children for simple small mistakes.Other side really Boy was sleeping in class because of headache?why did he not tell teacher and go home?

The so-called beating children must be made a criminal offense. I'm sure there are other non-violent methods of punishments that are possible, and even more effective.

Also, beating kids does not make them better in a healthy manner. Instead, it can play havoc with a child's psyche.

If it is frowned upon in our society for a boss to beat his employee, why then is it right for teachers to beat children in schools?

    Shame on such teachers!

This is the natural continuation of parenting by primary and may be higher school teachers. Are there any parents who donot have a mechanism to discipline their children with fear of corporal punishment? A day will come even the parents who slap their children will be howled up before authorities for such crime.

I believe that we go to school to learn. Imitating our teachers or parents is typically a norm for children. In several instances we hero worship them along with movie starts and seniors in school. Having said this, I think we continue to carry on the trait of hitting someone as we justify that it is the appropriate punishment for a crime. Look around, you see people hitting their servants without any qualms. We have to stop this in schools. Times have changed we have to send the teacher for anger management. I would rather have the students attentiveness graded as opposed to hitting the student.

When we went to school in the 80's there were no "Childlines", "Helplines" and so called Child Welfare Committees.... However we were taught to be disciplined with the "Stick"....The Stick instilled a fear of knowing right from wrong... The Teacher or Guru was the most respected person and motivator in our lives and we still look up to our teachers even today for what they moulded us to become...
Children & teacher relationship is like clay in a potter's hand.... Unless the potter tames and makes the clay useful, it will not become a beautiful pot or a cup.
I agree there could be some stray teachers, but these are very few.... Teaching was, is and never will be an easy profession. It needs a lot of dedication and patience and most teachers even today choose to become teachers because they have these values in them...However today's children lack discipline because they lack the fear of the Stick, and the Teachers are tortured and blamed either ways... They have the support of the stupidity of their parents guided by these helplines who make the teacher or Guru helpless....
There are Rapists, chain snatchers, thieves, drug addicts etc. as young as 14 & 15 in our country today.... Why ??? I think the Child Helplines will have an answer to this....

Few Months ago I was in Udupi, spending my Holidays, was travelling in a local city bus which was almost full, except one seat, where my Primary School Teacher was sitting and reading local Kannada News Paper. Next stop 2 young Women got in to the bus, one of them seeing an empty seat next to the Teacher, told the other to sit, but she answered saying...heyy...awwu enklena Teacherde, arna baritt encha kullun ( hey she is our teacher, how can we sit next to her )Hearing this my heart got overwhelmed with the sentiments and respect they ( we ) show to our Teachers. This particular Teacher used to beat us with her wooden ADIKOLU for not by hearting the Kannada Maggi and other Lessons, by which we are able to calculate without using Calculators. Teachers profession we consider as NOBLE, and we respect them more than our Parents. Please comment if I am right. To all my Teachers a BIGG NAMASTHE.

One should leave it to the teachers. If the student do not obey the teacher's instructions repeatedly naturally any human being is going to get angry. Punishing the students is not a crime!!.

When we studying in schools we used to get so scared of the Head Master. He had a Nagara Bettha. So much he used to beat on our palms. Yeda kai mundhe, Bala kai mundhe. We never did all these thamashas.

Today's generation is gone case. Hence punishment tho bantha hai.

The teacher is like Lord Brahma as he Generates the knowledge within us,

John, it's time India come out of this convent culture of corporal punishment. No developed countries today do this. Hitting will have an psychological effect all throughout their life. If kids are treated properly, they will be good citizens in future. They may be naughty in childhood which is natural. People can develop many other ways to deal with it, than hitting. But our teachers till follow the old outdated systems.

I completely disagree with the readers who supports this teacher. Only those teachers will beat who are unable to teach, treat, correct the child lovingly. Older days are gone. In those days teaching was a VOCATION, later it became a PROFESSION and unfortunately now this is by ELIMINATION (The person eliminates everywhere will choose teaching). Only few teachers may be good and dedicated. Shame on our system. Think seriously at least on teachers day.

    Agreed Mr. R. Bhandarkar

    and may I add

The boy's action grossly amounts to defying the teacher's consistent efforts of imparting knowledge into maybe 30 - 40 thick heads in this class.

    He should have gone home.

This Childline Members is probably made of mothers and fathers who practically do not spend more than 15 minutes with their own children and yet encourage children to revolt against society.

In America they save the child from being disciplined by a father and send him to a foster home and years later when he grows up and commits a murder send him to an electric chair.

If you consider the lawlessness that is fast catching up in India, parents should accept blame for not imparting in their children how to respect elders, especially their teachers.
