Mangalore, Sep 13: Is it an extension of the rainy season or have the rain gods revised the annual rain schedule with an extra month or is it a bonus quota of rain?

The rains which DK district witnessed from September 10 have taken the people by surprise. It has been showering blessings from Sunday, and Tuesday and Wednesday were entirely rainy days with no respite at all.

The constant downpour, however, did not affect normal life to a great extent. Except for a few instances of lightning striking houses and in one instance killing one person, the rains have been calm throughout.

After the people were used to seeing rains sign off by degrees, the kind of rain felt in mid-September this time, quite reminiscent of and characteristic of mid-July, brought surprise to office-goers, school children and businessmen, along with a bit of irritation.

The dried up potholes which were unattended to by the district administration were filled with rainwater, turning them into deathtraps for motorists.

The rains, however, cooled down the weather and brought down the humidity which was building up in the region in the first week of September.

Umbrellas popped up again and raincoats became inevitable for two-wheeler-riders. The Met Department too is uncertain about the time when the rainy season will totally wind up, giving way to the pleasant winter season. Interestingly, in some areas, there are already signs of winter like thick dew or fog, besides the accompanying chill during the nights.

The rains were successful in delighting children and farmers who got busy in their fields.

City life which went slightly helter-skelter with the first surprise shower gradually came to terms with the nature’s ways.

A question that lingers in the minds of many citizens here is, whether this bounty of rain will ensure enough water during the summer months of 2007? Or will it be back to square one, as it is every year?
