Udupi, Sep 11: Jnanapeeta awardee Dr Kota Shivaram Karanth Hutturu Prashasti (Kota Shivaram Karanth's birth place award) will be given to Indian poet, short story writer and lyricist, Dr Jayant Kaikini on October 10, the birth anniversary of Shivaram Karanth.

Anand C Kundar, the executive president of Kotathattu gram panchayat, addressing the media here on Wednesday, said, "The award would be given at Theme Park, Kota, the birthplace of Shivaram Karanth. A selection committee chose Dr Jayant Kaikini for the award. The gram panchayat felt that as Dr Shivaram Karanath was born at Kota, an award bearing his name should be given."

Kota Shrinivas Poojary, MP was the initiator of this award.

DR Kaikini was born in Gokarna to Gourish Kaikini, a school teacher and a Kannada litérateur and Shanta, a social worker. After a Master's Degree in Biochemistry from Karnataka University, Dharwad, he moved to Mumbai where he worked as a chemist for many years.

Dr Kaikini is regarded as one of the most significant of the younger writers in Kannada today. He writes film scripts and is based in Bangalore. His poetry is characterized by subtle imagism, a minute documentation of a seemingly common place, a colloquial idiom and a conscientious refusal to engage in any poeticizing. He created a new wave in Kannada songs. He gave a new style and initiated a turning point in the Kannada film industry.
