Mangalore: LLB students hold evaluators responsible for failure in exams

Mangalore, Sep 11: Students of Vivekananda College, Puttur who failed in their final semester LLB exams conducted by Karnataka State Law University have blamed the evaluators for their plight.

Addressing a press meet here on Friday September 11, Asma, a law student of the college, said, "Out of 28 students of my class, more than 20 are facing similar issues. The highest score in the class is 56 percent which is truly horrifying. Majority of the students are silent due to the fear of action from the university. We demand revaluation of the papers so that justice is done."

Prameela, another student of the same course, revealed shocking facts regarding the evaluation of her 2nd semester answer sheets.

"I had failed in one of the subjects in the second semester and even after revaluation the result was the same. I then wrote the re-exam, after which I received the marks card of the previous semester exam I had answered. I found that I had actually passed, and I need not have written the re-exam at all. I also got marks card of the re-exam, in which I passed. The whole system of Karnataka State Law University is shocking."

Tahir Hussain, president of the Human Rights and Corruption Eradication Union, Puttur taluk pointed out the negligence of evaluators when the evaluation of the answer sheets of the tenth semesterLLB exams.

He said, "The students Asma and Prameela had written the exam of final year LLB exam in the month of June 2014. The evaluation of the answer sheets was done in Hubli. To the surprise of the students both the students had failed in one subject each and even after the re-evaluation the result was the same. When Asma obtained a copy of the answer sheet through RTI and consulted the lecturers of same college and another college they came to the conclusion that she was supposed to get 55 marks out of 100, and not 28 as declared after revaluation. This seems to be the result of irresponsible evaluation of the answer sheets and since it is the question of the future of the students, the answer sheets have to be revaluated again and justice has to be served to the students. The concerned officials should take a stern action against the evaluators so that this mistake is not repeated in the future."

The students later informed that they will serve a notice to the university and a copy will be sent to the governor and to the home minister of the state and a writ petition regarding the result too will be filed in the high court of Karnataka.

    There is a huge flaw in the evaluation system. My college was under VTU and we faced similar issues. I thankfully never failed any exam but my complain was the terrible evaluation. They use an answer scheme where the "correct" answers are defined by some person. There is not "correct" answer for subjects based on design and math etc. I saw lower marks on my designs which were nearly 25% more efficient that the class topper's textbook based method! Our education system is still in the past and we expect our country to move forward! Our students are not taught to think outside the box!

    This is not the problem of the University, but that of inefficient teachers who are evaluating answer papers. It used to happen with Mysore University as well and I have faced the same problem in more than 4 to 5 papers during 6 semesters. Lecturers teaching in Kannada (who can not even form a single sentence in English) are evaluating Answer papers written in English. Blaming university is not fair when it can not fire such inefficient teachers (I wonder how they did their law). Most of the Law Colleges hire such teachers as they are available at cheaper salary. This is the actual problem.

    This is the problem with our Law university(Hubli). i request our responsible MLA and Education Ministers to short it out this matter. so many students all over karnataka facing this problem. but no one come out fight against this.

    very good now u should come out of the trouble and plead not guilty for who have done the faults, any how whole life you have to fight for criminals and prove them innocent.

    Feel sorry for the students who really passed but result came out as fail. All we can say it is just because of corruption. Lectures who did the correction of the exam paper may not been even passed Pre-degree and with influence of money they might obtained such title. Strict action to be taken against them.

    It is really very shocking to know the plight of Puttur Vivekananda college LLB Students,who are feeling the brunt of the colossal negligence of the evaluators.Evaluators of Hubli,they are in fact not capable for evaluation as they are not qualified enough.Such evaluators,who are playing on the future of the students not only should be debarred but also to be severely punished,so that the said mistakes should not be repeated by any one else,who come in their place.They are so irresponsible or they may not be knowing how to evaluate.This is the case with Hubli/Karnataka evaluators.May God bless the students to accomplish their dreams.
