Bangalore, Sep 25: With the State Government planning to install eight garbage processing plants in the next few months to find a permanent solution to the disposal of Bangalore’s garbage, the residents of Mandur can heave a sigh of relief with effect from the coming December 1 as the Bruhat Bangalore MahanagaraPalike will stop transporting garbage to the Mandur landfills.

The residents of Mandur, who have been complaining of foul smell emanating from the landfill as also the menace of mosquitoes, will be finally rid of these problems.

Karnataka’s Transport Minister B Ramalinga Reddy, who is in-charge of Bangalore Urban district, assured the party members and workers that BBMP has decided not to transport garbage from the city to Mandur landfills from December 1.

Reddy, who visited the Congress office here on Thursday, said eight garbage processing plants are getting ready in a few months.

He said one garbage processing plantat Bommanahalli would be ready shortly.

It may be recalled that the residents of Mandur staged an agitation in July opposing transportation ofgarbage to dumping at Mandur landfills.

The residents had also demanded soil topping on the garbage, controlling diseases and foul smell in the vicinity and not discharging water outside the landfill.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who personally met the representatives of the residents, had assured that their demands would be accepted and implemented.

To a question on Prime Minister NarendraModi’sSwacha Bharat Andolan, he said the Government would support the programme and take up the campaign in Bangalore also.

The State had launched the Swacha Bangalore programme during the S M Krishna regime during 1999-2004.

The Centre has planned to launch the campaign on GabdhiJayanti Day, on October 2.
