Curfew Extended Late Friday Night to City Limits Also

Mangalore, Oct 6: After a few serious cases of assault and violence reportedly took place in Padil and some other places within the city limits in the late hours of Friday evening, the district authorities are reliably learnt to have extended the curfew orders to city limits also.
This step has been taken after 8 pm, as confirmed by the district police control room to Daijiworld.
People were taken unawares. Apparently there were no announcements by mobile public address system. Many people in Hampankatta and downtown areas who did not know of the latest developments has to face beatings.
People who did not store enough provisions at home and daily-wage-earners will have a tough time, since the police sources indicated that the curfew might last till Monday.

Mangalore, Oct 6: At a hurriedly-convened media meet on Friday night in the Circuit house here,district minister-in-charge B Nagaraj Shetty, MLA Yogish Bhat,deputy commissioner Maheshwar Rao and superintendent of police B Dayananda gave the details of the measures taken to curb the spate of violence that has hit Mangalore and around.
Janata Dal MLC from Bangalore and a former top police official Abdul Azeem was also present at the present. Contrary to the information available earlier, director general of police B S Sial will not be coming to the city. (It may be recalled that Sial had served as SP of the undivided district over a decade ago and this area is a familiar territory for him.)
All of them made a common appeal to the people to maintain calm and peace, not to give credence to or spread rumours and not to circulate unconfirmed information through SMSs on mobiles.
Minister Nagaraj Shetty made a significant statement saying that the entire trouble started with the call for 'bundh'. He requested all political parties, organizations and individuals to desist from giving a call for bundhs, and thus putting the public to inconvenience and stop this practice in the district totally in the district.
Measures
Curfew has been imposed in the entire area of Ullal police station limits, Veera Nagar, Faisal Nagar, Deralakatte and Madani Nagar under Konaje police station limits. The police have been asked to take action against anyone violating the curfew. This measure will be in force for 48 hours from 5 pm IST on Friday, October 6 to 5 pm on Sunday, October 8.
Further to the earlier news report about the shoot-at-sight order, it was announced that the necessity of such a measure is part of the curfew enforcement in extreme circumstances.
Kodagu SP Ramachandra has been deputed to take control of the Bantwal area until further orders. DK SP Dayananda will provide a briefing on the situation every day at 6-00 pm until further notice.
Twentytwo additional platoons are being deployed to control the situation. If necessary, as assured by the state governmentm forces from outside the state may also be requisitioned. The services of the Rapid Action Force may be sought as well.
The situation will be reviewed after 48 hours. Depending on the situation on Saturday, further orders on opening of shops and establishments would be issued.
A peace meeting of political leaders, community leaders, heads of organizations and officials will be convened on Saturday, October 7 evening to chalk out ways and means to maintain peace, law and order and harmony.
Incidents
Besides the incidents of violence already reported, cases of stabbing also took place at Soorinje and Chokkabettu, said Nagaraj Shetty. Thirtytwo cases have been booked so far, said the SP. Incidents were also reported from Punjalakatte in Beltangady taluk and Farangipet in Bantwal taluk but the situation has been brought under control.
So far 30 shells of lachrymatory gas have been lobbed to disperse the trouble-making crowds and three rounds of fire were executed in the air.
Eightytwo persons had been arrested until earlier on Friday, and later 35 arrests were made in Ullal.

Mangalore: Inspector General of Police, S N Satyanarayan Rao has ordered the police to shoot at sight in Mangalore Taluk following intense violence at Ullal region.
On Friday evening when group clashes turned uncontrollable the police resorted to lobbing of tear gas. However miscreants destroyed shops in several places from Ullal to Deralakatte and set several vehicles on fire.
Following this a shoot-at-sight order was given by IGP Western Range.
To monitor the situation in Mangalore, Director General of Police BS Sial will be visiting city shortly, police sources said.
The sale of liquor has also been banned in Mangalore.

Peace in Ullal was disrupted by group clashes between members of two communities on Friday. The atmosphere was stirred up with violence when members of one community attacked persons coming out of a house of worship. This triggered hostility which took the shape of a communal friction, sources said.
The police had to resort to lobbing of tear gas in many places.
Tension prevailed around Ullal Dargah and in Thokottu.
A postman named Vishwanath was assaulted at Amblamogaru. He was going on duty on his bike and was attacked. His vehicle was set ablaze.
Miscreants have heavily damaged Bharath High School Ullal and are on a mad rampage destroying shops and public establishments.
Stones and bottles were being hurled by members of both the communities at each other. The police had to lob tear gas shells to control the situation.
Both the Superintendent of Police B Dayananda and deputy commissioner Maheshwar Rao rushed to the spot to take control of the situation.
The miscreants who burnt tyres also had nails spread all over the roads aimed at puncturing the tyres of vehicles passing by. Informed sources said the tyre of the jeep in which the district SP traveled developed a flat tyre.
Risking their lives, the police, although in inadequate number, put in their best efforts to control the mob at Kuttar.
Even the journalists and lensmen had a narrow escape from the violent attacks at Chembugudde on their way to Kuttar.
Shops were set on fire in Mastikatte, Pandit House, Kuttar, Deralakatta and Kumpala bypass. A house of worship at Kuttar was also attacked. A car was destroyed at Kallapu.
Mangalore: Assault on Two Persons – Situation still Grim

Several groups of miscreants have been making rounds in the city threatening shop keepers to pull down shutters. At several places the teenagers on bikes also pelt stones creating nuisance.
While all commercial establishments remained close, a few medical stores and hotels conducted trade.
A shocking incident took place near the RK bus depot in Kannur-Adyar where a mob stopped an ambassador car and mercilessly assaulted the passengers.
On Friday two persons were traveling towards Mangalore when their vehicle was intercepted. The trouble-makers beat them and finally attacked them with swords.
Both persons said to be employees of PWD have been identified as Ashok a driver of a road roller and Naveen a lorry driver. The former was injured by a sword and has been admitted to a hospital.
Apart of this no untoward incidents have taken place. Police patrolling continues on a brisk pace.

Mangalore: City Gripped with Fear – Tension Prevails
Mangalore Oct 6: The Deputy Commissioner of DK district Maheshwar Rao has ordered for schools and colleges to remain closed on Friday and Saturday in view of the present tension that rocked the city after a communal clash.
The police on Friday arrested more than 75 people in connection with the riots in various parts of Mangalore and around.
Although no untoward incident occurred on Thursday night, the city is still gripped by fear. Stray instances of violence have been reported in several places of the city.
A private bus was damaged at Pumpwell after miscreants pelt stones at the wee hours of Thursday. They also burnt tyres on the road.
At Padil a group of over 8 persons assaulted a teenager. Khader who was assaulted has been admitted to the hospital with head injuries.
A KSRTC bus which was plying to Vittal was attacked by a mob at Alape. Stones were pelt at the bus which injured several passengers. However the bus managed to return with the passengers to the depot.
Normal life has been affected as the city buses refrained from regular service. Office goers faced great inconveniences as even auto rickshaws went off road.
The police have been patrolling in and out of the city. The Thursday’s violence has injured over 80 persons including five policemen.
