Mangalore, Sep 28: The fourth JMFC court has convicted a person on seven charges of cheating filed by a woman, and imposed a heavy fine running into several lacs of rupees.
Sampath Raj (33) was convicted for duping a woman identifed as Rajeshwari Shetty in a dubious land deal.
In 2012, Sampath had shown a property to Rajeshwari and asked her to buy to a portion of it, saying that he would buy the remaining portion. He asked her to pay in cash.
Believing his words, the lady paid him Rs 33 lac in installments, only to realize later that she had been duped.
She then filed a private complaint in JFMC IV court, which convicted him on seven charges under the Negotiable Instrument Act.
As punishment under two charges, the court ordered Sampath to pay a fine of Rs 6.12 lac or face two years' imprisonment, in three charges he was told to pay Rs 5.10 lac or face two years imprisonment, and for another two charges, he was ordered to pay Rs 4.08 lac or face one-and-a-half years in jail and Rs 2.56 lac or one year in jail.
He was ordered to pay the above fines by October 21.
Sampath Raj had previously been arrested for cheating a US-based Mangalorean dentist with a similar fradulent land deal.
