Mangalore: Poovamma with bronze in Asiad makes Mangaloreans proud

Mangalore, Sep 29: Mangalorean M. Povamma Raju has won the bronze medal in the women’s 400 metre race event held at the Incheon Asiad Main Stadium in the 17th Asian Games on Sunday.

In this event, Bahrain's Oluwakemi Mujidat Adekoya clinched the gold medal with a timing of 51.59 secs. Vietnam's Thi Lan Quach got the silver with a personal best effort of 52.06 secs and Povamma got the bronze with a timing of 52.36 secs.

Poovamma fell slightly short of her previous best of 51.73 seconds.

She is ranking second in the Asian ranking presently in the 400 meter women’s category.

Poovamma has dedicated the bronze medal to her mother. Poovamma’s family originally from Gonikoppal in Coorg district has been living in the Urwa stores locality of Mangalore for years. Poovamma also finished her graduation in Mangalore.
Poovamma has also won several medals at national and international events. She had also participated in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
