Udupi: Gandhi Jayanthi celebrated by 'Cleaning City'

Daijiworld Media Network- Udupi (HB)

Udupi, Oct 2: Mahatma Gandhi received a unique tribute from Udupi city. The 145th birthday of the Mahatma Gandhi was observed in various places in Udupi district here on October 2.

In connection with Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations, Udupi District in charge Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake launched Prime Minister’s ‘Clean-up India Abhiyan’ here on Thursday by garlanding the statue of Mahathma Gadhiji near clock tower, Udupi.

Addressing the gatherings he said “Gandhi had a penchant for cleanliness in his personal habits and strongly promoted it in society. Especially he focused on SC/ST colonies. The Abhiyan is a program, which creates awareness among people about cleanliness. Public participation plays an important role in keeping the city clean. Cleanliness should not be limited for one day. We will present a proposal in the cabinet that Udupi be added under heritage town plan."

He also added that "We the people have to pay tribute to father of our nation, by cleaning up the city."

MLA Pramodh Madhwaraj, speaking on the occasion, "In the State, Udupi district has to stand first in clean city, within a year. The purpose will be only completed if people involve themselves in this Abhiyan."

Sorake symbolically drove a Clean India Abhiyan by sweeping the city market, service bus stand and city bus stand.

Sorake began his day by giving a tribute to Mahathma Gandhi statue near Bhujanga Park, Ajjarkad.

District BJP members, CMC members and members of Udupi Chamber of Commerce and Industries joined their hands in this cleanliness programme.

DC SS Pattana Shetty, Yuvaraj, Amrutha Krishnamurthy, Shrikanth Rao, Thingale Vikramarjuna Hegde, Mattar Ratnakar Hegde, Yashpal Suvarna, Naveen Kutyar, Shyamala Suvarna, Sheila K. Shetty and others were present.

Ms. Lydia she has just shared her experience all Indians including you must be knowing but want to deny that this job is to be done only by lower class. Unless people have basic civic sense of not spitting and defecating the public places all the efforts is a waste. Every Indian should know that just like their houses public places also belongs to them and if it is dirty it will attract sickness and harmful disease.

This actions are just for pictures. They know now a days media people want to fill the pages with such pictures which they get easily.
How many pictures of the people who daily cleaning the city, Fish market, flower market & vegetable etc. are published by media. ?
Believe me or not just few days back when I was on leave, Mr. Pramod Madwaraj was live on U-Channel, and the subject was “Nagarabhiruddi”.
I called & spoke to him on Air, I told him since last 1 year & 4 months I am struggling to clear the waste dumping in the heart of the Manipal city near Tiger Circle next to Bharat Petro station. Bus, Auto & Taxi drivers passes urine in public near where the rubbish is dumped.
I have contacted earlier DC Mr. Reju, Earlier Udupi Nagara sabha President & Health Inspector. That time BJP was in majority in Udupi Municipality.
Finally after long they cleared the waste but people again started dumping & passing urine in public near bus stand itself even though there is a Toilet near Karkala bus stand.
I suggested DC & Municipality authorities to clean & make additional parking for vehicle by applying tarmac.
So, two problems will be solved, Lack of parking & public nuisanse.
After hearing all this Mr. Pramod said, we have a proposal to modify the Manipal Bus stand but I can’t promise anything now.!!! ..
My dear friends now please you all guess, today’s sweeping action is for what ? To fool Gandhij’s soul?
They are just sweeping people’s mind not the rubbish on the road.

    Mr. Ilyas , Qatar,
First of all, I am not supporting any Political parties. I am a part time social work every month on my leave I utilise 10 days for public service.

Secondly, I have to reply your question, please visit Udupi & Manipal and witness the developments, example Karavali junction to Manipal dual road & Syndicate circle to DC Office road.

You mean to say this is done before ten years or after Mr. Siddaramayya become CM ??

This type of negative thinking & silly mentality never help in development. Try to improve please. Sitting in Qatar does not solve local problems.
If you need little more details of my social work , you can ask Mr. Iqbal, Manna in Qatar.

Please do not join the cleanup drive until the government provides you with mask and gloves. People spit on the street, dust, dirt, urine/ stool and so on. TB is quiet common, and no one knows who is infected either. Please do not allow college students, school children to participate in this. Why can't government get road sweeping trucks? designated garbage disposal bins, garbage pick up trucks so on. India is not a poor country anymore.

Good move from Modi Govt but he has to clean corrupt politicians first....then automatically India will be clean everywhere and no such dramas are required. We should salute to our entire municipality worker who cleans our area daily base and not to these corrupt people.

There is nothing nice about it...
It is actually demeaning Gandhi by taking his name and cleaning a place for the sake of publicity. I ask all those who are in the pictures above and those elsewhere all over India, have they ever done this cleaning work the rest of the year? Did they show same zeal, enthusiasm in cleaning or overseeing cleanliness every where?
Why only on Gandhi Jayanthi day?
These Ministers\officials and many others can daily oversee or take to task those who are tasked with the cleaning of public places which will please Gandhi more and honour him such.
These do not do their duty allotted to them and on GJ Day they come out with all these gimmicks. People watching them should shout at them "Shame, Shame" until they vanish from doing that publicity stunt.

I hope this cleanliness drive do not remain an annual event but a daily affair.People spitting and littering must be caught and fined. Small areas can be demarcated and the one man can be made responsible for the area cleanliness and maintenance and his name can be pasted with his contact number on the wall. He should be given power to stop and charge fine from the law breakers. Common man can extend their support to the area responsible person. Once we start it, soon it will be the habit of every individual.

I remember living with members of a certain community who refused to clean their toilet saying their caste does not do such low grade work.

They used the same dirty toilet for months until the landlord, unable to bear the stink, offered to hire a labour to do the work and charged them for the wages.

Well, first week they paid but the second week when the worker came to clean, they asked 'was it not cleaned just last week' ? This happened right in our own Mangalore.
