Singer Yesudas finds women in jeans jarring

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 3(DHNS) : Celebrated singer K J Yesudas on Thursday spoke against women wearing jeans as it is “provocative” and “creates trouble for others”.

Echoing the voices that have previously urged women against “trying to be men”, the legendary playback singer said he was upset to see women “titillating” people by wearing jeans.

“It is disheartening to see women wearing jeans and creating trouble for others. We should stick to clothes that suit us. What has to be concealed has to be concealed,” said Yesudas. He was speaking at an event titled “Shuchitwa Keralam Sundara Keralam” (Clean Kerala, Beautiful Kerala) organised by the Indo-Arab Cultural Council.

Yesudas went on to back his statement by reasoning that a woman’s beauty is in her “gentleness” and not in being overtly provocative. “She should not try to attract or distract others with the way she wears her clothes,” the singer told a gathering of students at the Swathi Thirunal College of Music.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Thiruvananthapuram Mayor K Chandrika.

Yesudas, or Dasettan for his legions of admirers, is a cultural icon with an unmatched following in Kerala.

He has maintained a guarded stance on socio-political issues pertaining to the state for most of his staggeringly successful career.

And now, his controversial new statement has triggered a raging debate on social media with commenters largely divided on the issue.

From the perspective of sexual harassment, what you have said is 100% true - it is the law & its implementation that need revolutionary changes and not dresses! At a personal level, am surely not for wearing revealing and tight clothes at all but it is absolutely unacceptable and condemnable to say that a woman wearing a mini skirt is a royal license for men to go ahead with the perverted act of sexual harassment.

WHAT YESU DAS SAID IS ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. THE BEST DRESS CODE FOR WOMEN IS CHURIDAR AND THEN SAREE. WHY THE INDIAN WOMEN WEARING TIGHT JEANS AND T SHIRT, SHORTS ETC.. LIKE THE WESTERN COUNTRY WOMEN?. THE INDIAN CULTURE IS DIFFER FROM THE WESTERN CULTURE. NOW A DAYS NEW GENERATION LADIES IN INDIA WANTS TO WEAR THE WESTERN DRESS CODES FOR SHOWING THE BODY STRUCTURE TO PUBLIC. THE WESTERN LADIES USING VERY VERY SHORT DRESS CODES IN BEACHES. CAN WE IMAGINE THAT A MALAYALI GIRL DRESS LIKE THAT IN A BEACH. THE MEANING IN YESU DAS MESSAGE IS GOOD FOR THE INDIAN WOMEN AND IT IS ACCORDING TO THE VALUABLE CULTURE OF OUR MOTHER INDIA. TAKE THE MEANING IN HIS WORDS POSITIVELY. I STRONGLY OPPOSING THE ATTITUDE OF NEW GENERATION LADIES WHO SUPPORTS FOR TIGHT JEANS , SHORTS AND T SHIRTS. SEE THE MAN IS NOT WEARING THE CHURIDAR AND SAREE. THE JEANS IS ORIGINALLY USED BY THE FARMERS IN WESTERN COUNTRIES IN THEIR AGRICULTURAL FIELDS BECAUSE THAT DRESS WILL LAST LONG THAN ANY OTHER DRESS MATERIALS. IN INDIA THE MEN IS WEARING GOOD DRESS CODES BETTER THAN INDIAN WOMEN. INDIAN LADIES THINK ABOUT IT.

Try explaining this to the animal inside man when he is about to attack you or anyone else...lust only arouses the animal inside men...jeans are like all tight clothing..they reveal more than they hide, they reveal all the curves and form ...which is why they burn and trouble men with the fire of lust...you have no idea of what you are talking about!!!

I think what he meant here was women wearing those tight leggings (sometimes skin colour) exposing thighs till the waist, it has been a fashion these days, riding on motor bikes etc. Honestly, women look more ugly in this. But Jesudas shouldn't have used the word Jeans, which is quite a decent attire if worn properly.

    Dear Madam Joyce....
    1) Please do not refer to a singing legend and a God-send to our country
as 'A Malyalee' and say 'what does he think' for God's sake!!
This in itself shows that you are in ignorance of the achievements of the legend.
    2) Please go through the article once again please. As if to counter your very point,Jesudasji is reported to have said 'What is to be concealed
is to be concealed' and I think that says about it all. There are different types of sarees also, the modern, designer ones and the more traditional ones of which you may be or may not be aware.
3)There are ways to 'wear a saree' also and you have referred to it. You can wear it below the belly button or whatever button, you can wear it above also.
That's what Dr.Jesudasji is saying again...'Conceal what is necessary to conceal' that's all!
There is this 'button' between concealing and revealing , and you need follow it ,is what he is saying in FACT.Got it?
    The choice is yours.
What is so special about a 'belly button' or any other organ for that matter -Tell me?Everybody has it...Is it not? Too much flaunting
    invites danger...yes or no??
And there is Mariam who is espousing some 'naked theory'!!
Please see through or get the 'gist' of what Jesudasji is saying.
No need to go 'very deep' about his comments regarding 'jeans' at all!
    Regards.
Get the broader meaning of how it is possible to be beautiful in the real sense of the term without any
    heavy attachments.

If they slip to animal state the moment they see a woman "poorly clad", I pity them...all their intelligence, their morality, their culture, their faith, their spirituality, their education and their common sense simply disappears and they collapse to the lowest ebb of their existence. Even animals do not 'rape' the female of their spices outside the time of their reproductive cycle. Mr. Jesusdas has the personal right to make any statement but went overboard in this narrow-minded statement. Some people are in a rush to swallow anything western, but they want to put a barricade of certain things western, which is an impractical vision and total paradox. You have your residency in Florida, did you find your Indian dress there totally wrapped up women there? Mr. Jesudas, you are a great singer, and start singing free of charge to raise money for the hungry people for the rest of your life, that will be far better than talking against blue jeans which is the most comfortable dress used all over the world-less cleaning and ironing worry. I have seen IAS officers wearing blue jeans in public functions, then please don't try to hinder the freedom of the women to wear what they prefer to wear. If you are not comfortable with them wearing blue jeans, look the other way around.

If you stay in some countries where only Europeans are around or in other countries where multi culture people are more this cannot be practiced. In such case you will be treated different. I believe we should adjust to society and live. if a beautiful lady wear sari ,whether people agree or not sari show all the curves of the body . When they walk all eyes turn about. No matter how much you cover still sari expose body more. What we need is change in men's thinking, attitude, behaviour.

God is Omnipresent. Clothing was made for humans, not for God. Read the fall of man and the consequences of sin if you have a copy of the Bible (Genesis 2, 3). After the fall of man, humans have been constantly sinning and have to overcome occasions of sin through the grace of God. Lastly, the "word of God" is a title given to Jesus Christ. Other titles given to Jesus Christ are "Immanuel", etc.

People have to change their mindset. in India rapes are happening because of weak law. There are lot of clauses in the Indian constitution to defend the culprits from the severe punishment. In Dubai women are wearing short or fit dresses and walking alone on the streets, but no one dare to touch because of strict law and order. Sowjanya or Nirbhaya wearing jeans before they get raped? However, if they want to express their opinions publicly then they should be ready to face the repercussions and public reactions of such opinions. Such opinions which are debatable and over which the public are generally divided are likely to make their comments look fine to some and controversial to others.
So if they are okay with facing controversy let them go ahead and comment or esle avoid commenting in public.

I support Dr. Yesudas's view on the dress code of women. Wearing tight jeans and tops tend to expose the curvatures of women's body and this unnessarily draws attention of men. And, now all men are not saints and some minds with evil thoughts heading toward crimes. Hence, he mentioned women should conceal what they are supposed to.

However, I wish Dr. Yesudas should not have been in the controversy. He is a legend, 50 years in the music industry and till date nobody could beat him in singing in South India. He is best known as the Mohd.Rafi of South.

Just like the saying goes beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, similarly perverted minds lies in the eyes of ba******ds. As some already commented that three years olds and sixty years olds are also not an exception Mr. Yesudas comments doesn't hold good at all. Mind you jeans and tshirts is more reasonable than sarees.

Well said ! Those who want women to wear jeans please advertise your own mothers , sisters , daughters and wives in jeans to the public and then face the problem of rape and molestation.. Then go for justice to police and court.. End up your life in all this..

No doubt Yesudas is a divine singer..But sometimes he gives some confusing statement too..I think he is giving more importance to Indian culture than western culture..Keralites day don't begin unless they listen his devotional songs early in the morning..So,they are not much bothered about this issue..Even if they are bothered, they treat it like Doddanna's (elder brother) advice..

Public figures, Celebrities whom people adore should be very careful in their public statements. Sometimes these people are influenced by evil thoughts which plague the society. Women can wear anything they like just like Men. Men should learn to respect women and stop advising how to dress. But Women should be held responsible for their deeds.

Yesudas spoke of his mind, it is up to the individual to accept, refuse, to like or dislike.
Everyone has some sets of belief, liking and standard, it does not mean that others have to accept or refuse it.
It is Yesudas way of thinking and looking pattern. Not everyones! Dressing patterns change according from time to time and season.
In many parts of Europe or west, in beaches people are naked, no one cares, it has become a pattern but NOT EVERYWHERE.
However in place of work and worship they too have dress code.

A statement of a man of Sri.Jesudasji's stature is always worth taking note of and interpreted in the correct sense.
Sri Jesudasji has not called for a 'ban on jeans'.What he means is
'For beauty to shine through, you need not have 'provocative dresses' only. It can shine through even in the most traditional of dresses which girls and women of yore used to wear'.
Jesudasji here is speaking of the 'inner beauty 'and nothing else.
For a man of his age, experience and wisdom , it is best that we be sensible to get the gist of his statement before flying all over and on one other with our deciphering.
To Jesudasji at this most pinnacle stage of his career and life time'nothing makes a difference'!

Yes. From the days of "Chit Chore" Jesudas voice is from his heart. Jesudas won millions of hearts.

He knows very well what is beauty, what is melody and what is discipline.

Today our youth are running behind mirage. In due course what tailor made mistake became Fashion.

In-discipline leads to over freedom which leads to crime, divorce as we read daily.

What Jesudas told is from his heart. Take it positively. Jesudas is the wealth of India.

He was also voiced against the discrimination of Guruvayoor temple people who not allowed him inside to worship - Cruel people.

I am happy that Agrees are more than Disagrees here. I don't care even Disagrees exceed due to Jean Lobbyists... We should not sell indiscipline and culture for mere convenience or fashion. One day people may argue to remove all rules from Constitution of India.

    Jai Jesudas... We love you..

Its good to see legend like Yesudas supporting the traditions of woman. One has to understand most of media online or offline is of feminist nature and directly accuse of being ' sexism '. But Yesudas spoke from his heart with due respect to chastity and purity.

Though its ones freedom to dress the way he or she can , but live in a society , so public reaction or opinion do matter. So here sensibility or appropriate comes to picture. The other part of statement being " being like men ". This makes true sense , so wanting to b equal !? , but they r different but complete each other. Its good to see the advent of feminists getting some strong critcism from well known peaple

I have immense respect for Yesudas and I like his talent and big fan.. that aside,.. this is a nonsensic statement one can make!! He shld keep away from all such statements!

even a 3 year old also is raped here and so is a old lady who dresses appropriately!! NO ONE knows what will provocate a animal inside a MAN!!! its time to educate such men and say that, YOU DONT HAVE ANY RIGHT, TO RAPE!!! cos REAL MEN DONT! .... dont tell women to dress like this or that .. or ask for ban on this or that style!! please..

'Animal Inside Man' stands out ,many a time, agreed.
However, this should be no excuse also to the 'demon in women' popping out time and again! .Sadly, this has been a regular feature of late, trying to make use and take unfair advantage of laws prevailing!
Naked or not naked -do not tell me that all women are 'Pure -Snow-Whites'!!

And dear Mariam, forgive me, but
your observation gives so much scope...
"Even if a woman is fully naked, animal inside man has no right over her to hurt her." You say...
Meaning in this context..'If a woman is naked in front of a man-he should think only of 'Anjal Naked Fry', 'Bolanjir Naked Fry',
Pomfret Naked Fry'or whatever and nothing else. Is it??
Think your call is for the 'Greatest Restraints' ever, which even our greatest sage Vishwamithra did not pass! And Menaka the beautiful who 'enticed' him was fully clothed!! You are I think ,asking the near impossible here ...Madam!
A few Daiji readers and commentators here though may 'Pass the Test'!!
    What??Names You want aa??
    Why?? 'No use' knowing!!Is there??

    put forth by Mariam!!
I think you have understood it perfectly by the way.Can i turn over or reroute some calls to you??.

I feel he is correct. We must learn to wear according to occasion. If someone wears swimming dress to go to temple or church it is objectionable. Even in all the places they are requesting to attend these holy places with proper dress but some people want to show they have beautiful figure?

I feel Yesudas should concentrate on his singing abilities than commenting on unnecessary things!
On what capacity he can comment on jeans clad women?
it is said that "beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder" same way pervert nature lies in rowdy men's brain! It is not in 'jeans' but it is in 'genes'!!
Our law should be strict against crime against women. Instead of asking women to dress up or wear burkha, why can not they hang rape victims? chop hand of molester??

Very well said and I think if he wanted to make an impact with his advise to women to shun Jeans wearing, he could have done that when he was becoming an idol few years back. That would have had some or more impact.....?? He did not do it then (may be he was not aware of certain culture then) but waited till he reached his "Pinnacle of his career" and when he most probably is well heeled and nothing "makes a difference!".

Respect towards ones art is different from their unusual comments made at later years of one's career.

with due respect to this man i really wonder how wearing jeans can be provocative. Or is he being provocated now at his old age. Strictly speaking i dont understand what he means by "what has to be concealed"... and such nonsense. In what way wearing jeans reveals which is concealed by udda langa, salwar or saree. He is another MCP who is trying to justify behaviour of men. What a shame!
