Music festival to celebrate 100 years of Begum Akhtar


New Delhi, Oct 3 (IANS): A two-day festival from Oct 6 will celebrate the centenary of the inspiring works of ghazal and thumri singer Begum Akhtar, the organisers said Friday.

The festival "Jamal-e-Begum Akhtar" will bring ghazal maestros like Pankaj Udhaas, Anoop Jalota, Penaz Masani, Talat Aziz and Chandan Dass on a platform together to recite her popular ghazals, share poetry and watch an audio-video presentation on the legendary singer who was born Oct 7, 1914.

Organised by NGO Kaladharmi, in association with Teamwork Arts, the festival is curated by Begum Akhtar's disciple Rita Ganguly.

"Pankaj Udhas will be conferred lifetime achievement award for his immense contribution to the ghazal genre, while eminent poet Amjad Ali Amjad of Pakistan will be conferred with another award," said a statement.
