Mangalore, Oct 6: Konkani Natak Sabha, Mangalore on Sunday October 5 celebrated its 71st anniversary with the staging of comedy play 'Zana Saglo Gaaun’ by popular Konkani writer and playwright, the late Joker Cascia (Joachim D'Souza), at Don Bosco Hall in the city.
The play was directed by Dolla Mangalore and enacted by popular artistes from the city.
A formal programme was held prior to the staging of the play. Fr Peter Cyprian D’Souza, president, Konkani Natak Sabha, gave a floral welcome to the guests while Dolphy Saldanha, vice-president, presented the annual report.
Ivan D’Souza, MLC, Walter Nandalike, editor-in-chief, Daijiworld.com and Thomas Sequeira, Abu Dhabi were the chief guests.
Antony Samuel (Tony Rujai) was felicitated on the occasion for his services rendered to Konkani theatre.
Acknowledging the honour, Samuel thanked the Konkani Natak Sabha for selecting him for the honour and also said that youngsters should come forward to build Konkani art, literature, and culture. He also thanked Narayana Mastru for his efforts in making him the person he is now.
On behalf of the Sabha, C G S Taccode and Dolla Mangalore were also felicitated by Walter Nandalike.
Addressing the gathering, Walter Nandalike said, "I feel happy to be a part of the felicitation ceremony. C G S Taccode and Dolla Mangalore are my Gurus in Konkani drama and honouring them is indeed a memorable occasion for me. KNS has produced many artistes who are shining now around the world." He requested MLC Ivan D’Souza to set up a Konkani Natak Academy in Mangalore in the future.
Ivan D'Souza in his address said, "Singers and drama artistes even after death live forever. It has been a long journey of 71 years for Konkani Natak Sabha and I will do my best to build the new Don Bosco Hall before we celebrate 75 years. I will speak in Konkani in the coming session of Parliament."
Regarding setting up of Konkani Natak Academy, he said, "Konkani Natak Academy is now possible because there is permission to build the own building of Konkani Sahitya Academy and we will try to accomodate the Natak Academy too in the same building. I am an optimist and I will do what I say."
He further added, "Drama artistes speak less but their actions speak louder than words. If we laugh, we can lead a healthy and longer stress-free life. I wish all the success to the team of the 'Zana Saglo Gaaun'."
C G S Taccode compered the ceremony. Sunil Menezes, general secretary, treasurer Prem Lobo and secretary Jerald Pinto were present on the dais.
