Night flights likely to be closed for six months at Mangalore Airport

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (DV)

Mangalore, Oct 6: Airport authorities of India will likely reschedule the night flights for six months from November 1 as it would carry out runway-end safety area work at the Mangalore International Airport.

Speaking to daijiworld, J T Radhakrishnan, director of the airport said, "Fifteen days ago, I had written to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation seeking permission to reschedule the night flights from 11:30 pm to 7:30 am to carry out the parallel runway taxi safety improvement works at the airport."

"This means that there will not be any take-off and landing process between 11.30 pm and 7.30 am. The affected airlines will have to reschedule their operation to avoid night landing and take off," he added.

"Suspending night flights would effect two airlines operating from Dubai and Dammam and the Winter schedule of airlines would be effective from October 27," he concluded.

Jet airways and Air India Express have rescheduled their flights during the Winter schedule. For new timings of the flight, please visit the airline websites.

Mangalore-Kuwait direct flight will be effective from October 27.

This is a first in the World. You will never hear 'closing night flight for repair work' for six months anywhere in the world.

Dubai completed the relaying of runway ahead of schedule. They removed the entire runway and re-laid it as anew. Complete lighting and taxi exists are revamped for two runways and all these time, hundreds of planes were landing and taking off without even a day of complete breakdown. Just to understand the magnitude, more people travel through Dubai airport in a day than Mangalore in a year. And they had just 2.5% less traffic in the first month of repairs.

Mangalore airport runway is very new and there's no major repairs required if there was no corruption on the works done. This seems a deliberate ploy to downgrade the importance of the airport and inconvenience the people. Everyone should protest against this injustice and this issue should be brought in front of our Prime Minister. When will Ache din come for Mangaloreans?
