Mangalore: On wedding day, bridegroom sent to judicial custody

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (RJP)

Mangalore, Oct 13: The police have arrested a bridegroom on his wedding day after the wedding got cancelled.

The arrested person is identified as Ilyas (24) from Pavoor.

A month back Aboobakar from Krishnapura 4th block had agreed to marry off his daughter to Ilyas. Ilyas asked Rs.2.5 lakhs for the wedding expenses which Aboobakar gave. The wedding was fixed to take place on October 12.

Ilyas was in touch with Aboobakar’s family. On October 10, two days before the wedding day, he phoned the bride to tell that he wanted 70 sovereign gold and cash of Rs.5 lakhs. Ilyas did not want to settle for less. He threatened that wedding would be called off if his demands were not met.

Aboobakar after discussing the matter with his family informed the police. The police arrested Ilyas on the day of the wedding. Now he has been remanded in judicial custody for another 14 days.

Police are investigating. Meanwhile Ilyas has agreed that he had taken the money and he wanted more for the wedding expenses.

Then I think you are putting your head in the ground and ignoring what is right in front of your eyes. EVERYONE, and I MEAN EVERYONE I have seen in the Catholic Community in Mangalore takes dowry or asks what you are giving to the girl. I stay in Mangalore and I know this from personal experience. If you dont believe me mail me and I will give you the details of the three families. I am so sure of my facts.

Well, this is not something new. Yes, dowry is illegal but Catholics also take dowry. in fact, I know of three prominent business families in Mangalore that first choose rich girls to get married to their sons. One in the lighting business even took one kg of gold from the bride before agreeing to get married. It was another thing that the bridegroom was beyond hopeless and is a failed businessman. They recently got their other son also married and I heard that the same situation happened there as well. Before we point fingers to other religions, we have to look into our own background as well.

Even though, I have a lot of reservation about catholic community in Mangalore, what I had observed last 30 yrs, all the marriages which I had attended, not a single marriage there was not a word of dowry.

We are 5 brothers and no one have ever taken dowry at all. Same case with all our friends, relatives.

So do not bring the unwarranted issues and brand the entire catholic community in a bad image. I can say majority of the catholic community in Mangalore diocese, they do not talk about dowry and they feel absurd to talk about it.

Thanks to our elders, those who have lead the movement in late 1950's, and 1960 by late Chapra & group, who have fought relentlessly against dowry.

Parents should utilize such money to provide higher education to girls instead of accumulating and offering to unscrupulous bride buyers, so that the girls will accomplish their career and can stand on their feet and fight against such dowry system. Most of the victims to such demands are educated/unemployed ones.

Revolution into the dowry system should be brought and not expected.

If all parents act like this we can prevent so many dowry deaths. Hats off to the father for putting the greedy bridegroom behind bars. He has certainly saved life of his daughter as well as other girls. His photo should be published in all leading newspapers so that he will not be able to collect any dowry even if he intends to do it.

Shame..I never knew, never heard off , these customs r there in Muslims too!!! I think, the groom has to give some "mehar ka rakkam"!!! anyways... kudos to girls family... never bow down to such pressures!! ...these good for nothing 24 year olds, should not be encouraged to get married either!! I mean, what do they have in such age, that u can send ur precious daughters... it will later only end up in torture for ur girl!! be a little sensible and say no to Dowry!!
