Kundapur, Oct 13: “Koragas are the original inhabitants. They were kings once upon a time. They contributed significantly for the security of the nation. Education can only bring social change. Through education and social awareness the Koraga community should prosper,” said district in-charge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake.

Sorake was speaking at ‘Jereno Kotta 2014,’ a programme organized jointly by Kundapur Taluk Koraga Shreyobhivraddi Association, Integrated Tribal Development Programme (ITDP) and Akshara Koraga Development and Training Institute at Dr Ambedkar Bhavan in Kumbhashi.

“The money sanctioned for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes should be spent in the same year. The money should not go back for any reason. We have taken a decision at Belgaum session that Koraga community should get benefits according to its number of population. Out of Rs 10,000 crores reserved for irrigation, Rs 1, 600 crores should be compulsorily spent. I will talk to the irrigation minister about the spending of money approved for Varahi irrigation project for the development of the scheduled caste and communities in the region and about making the villages as model villages. Kumbhashi colony should be developed,” the minister added.

“Inequality is not created by God but by human beings. When we come out from inequality only then we enjoy freedom. Opportunities should be created and encouraged,” the minister concluded.

Village Panchayat president Govinda Puthran presided. Taluk Panchayat member Vishwanath Shetty, Aksharadasoha director Sitaram Shetty, Tekkatte Government Pre University College vice principal Gopal Shetty and Grama Panchayat PDO Gayathri were present.

Teacher Shekar Mepu was felicitated during the function. Ganesh from Akshara introduced the guests in a traditional style. Shekar Maravanthe with help from Vinitha Kumbhashi moderated the programme.

Prior to the programme, the minister visited the houses being built at the Koraga colony.

    I appriciate Sorake's view and concern for Koraga community.He is a role model for politicians.I wish that Sorake should relinquish his MLA seat of Kaup immediately to make way for a learned Koraga man to contest in the bye election and contribute to the ideals.I hope that he will soon anounce this in the press.....

    In the name development of backward community our government offices undeveloped. Reaching to office 10.30 am. Starts work 11 am. Lunch break 1 pm. start to close 4.30 p.m. Leave the office 5p.m. Enjoying record number of the public holidays. Student to superintendent they have quota to qualify. More and more back ward communities adding day by day. Still no body can touch them and they are untouchable in other way.

    Due to the reservation quota we may see a lot of the backward class in the government jobs, just because of that you may see only them when you go to a govt office, so do not accuse only them, all people working in a government office are work dodgers. Now that the government has put attendance cards, they will have to report for duty on time and leave on time. If the ministers (our so called leaders) themselves set a bad example then what will the citizens do.

    Mr. Shridhar, what I feel just for the sake of arguement you are writing here without thinking twice. Read my comments once again, I said “most of the, not all of “?.

    1) Did I mentioned the percentage ?

    2) Come with me I will show & prove the percentage which you told is wrong.

    3) I am in contact with most of the Government office related to public service because of my Social work activities.
    4) Do you know who is the President of Udupi Municipality? You are talking of high post low post.
    How you justify your comments in this case?

    5) I did not say they are corrupt !! I always support them & that’s why I wrote about my service to them which I did happily for their development. Even now come to Udupi with me, I will take you to their colony where they live in government land. I am fighting against one of the BJP dominated grama Panchayath to convert the land to their name through Akrama Sakrama.

    I always write the Truth what I have seen & experienced. Nothing wrong in this. I never write blindly.

    All communities including scheduled castes suffered under landlords and Brahmins,which is still continuing in northen India. Pourohityashahi has been more harmful to Dharma than Anglashahi or Mughalshahi. According to them all others are shudras(untouchables), but eventually Brahmins will become untouchables if same attitude continues.

    HUBBASHIKA , patron and king of Koragas ruled coastal areas of karnataka and kerala . Also defeated king Mayuravarman to Establish KORAGA kingdom. With relevance to historical sources , later his army defeated by Lokaditya and subsequent massacre of him and family , drove the entire KORAGA community to forest . Also there is a skeptical connection between koraga tribes with abbysians , which are far scattered all over the world . One of fascinating thing about tribe is their preference for animals died of natural death than slaughtering , which is very noble practice

    Mr. Sorake, you are exactly behaving as per your name. There is fish called “Sorakey” ( Kite fish). This fish have a poisonus small thorn on its tail, which is not easily visible. But it pokes to human, they will cry with pain.

    Same way, this gentle man Mr.Sorake have hidden agenda, so talks about Koragas. Let us know when Koraga ruled India as a King?

    Secondly, I do agree we have to get rid of the caste differences with them. All are human beings.
    In 1970’s I worked (as a social worker) as a Team leader with six students from Rosani Nilaya college for social work to develop the Colony of Koraga Community at Hosabettu under the sponsorship of Jyoti Mandir Welfare Society, of Mukka Church. When I went inside their house, they were hesitating to allow me by saying, if your Parents will come to know then we will be in trouble. I had Lime Juice in their house even though in 70’s people never used to touch any food from Koraga’s house.

    But now a days every restaurants Koragas can have food with others & other so called higher caste people will use the same plate after washing.

    But unfortunately mos of the Government offices filled with schedule class people, when they won’t work sincerely, we can’ not even complain.

Pl don't make sweeping statements like this. Scheduled caste people get reservation only 22 percent and which is proportion to their population and balance 88 percent are occupied by the high caste people. If we are having problem in govt. departments you can not just blame small percentage of people that too when they occupy mostly low grade jobs like peon and clerks etc.. The most of the corruption in Govt. offices are done by people who are in the top posts which are very rarely occupied by the SC/ST people..

    Really poor and downtrodden people. Inspite of 67 years of independence of our country, the condition of these people has not changed much. mainly due to the lack of conviction and the will in the political rulers hitherto.They alongwith other some bleeding heart secularists spent all their energy and money only in pampering and appeasing their votebanks. But not the poor Koragas or such downtroden. If Mahathma's strugle for eradicating untouchability had continued in the same vigor these people would have been in a better condition by now.
    Anyway ,wholehearted efforts from all of us can bring them up and to the mainstream.

    if u see that way, ONLY Brahmins never became rulers in this country! they only advised who were ruling and always lived a simple life and termed as "BADA BRAHMANA"!! .... ...incha poora jaati politics malpodchi anna!!

    Lingayat Veerendra Patil was removed by Billawa Bangarappa, and he was removed by a kutantra of Devadiga Moily!.... jaatig jaati page.... everybody is treated badly one way or the other by their own people... this lead to getting Uppercaste Devegowda to limelight... rest is history!.... so, shun this politics! try helping each and everyone on the basis of "Poor and rich... Urban and rural"!! all will get the benefits equally... Yes, I agree Dalits have been mistreated for years.. but their own people who r in good positions due to resevrations, hardly educate the people about the schemes available.. instead, they continue to use those benefits even to 3rd generation and the adivasis who r living in jungle r still in same condition.. is this your inclusive development?

    What you have mentioned is also true but we cannot treat or neglect them for generation to come.
    I have to mention that how these people used to be treated/utilized in the past (type of job) when there was no sanitation system in Mangalore in and around 50’s – 60’s. Such a humiliating/disgusting job. (Thoti’s)

    Time is changed and let our mentality also change to sympathize on down trodden and neglected tribes.

    Besides Koragas, even Mundala, Maayila, Pambada & Parava community people were also original inhabitants of Tulunadu. Researchers like P Gururaj Bhat have opined that most probably Mundala & Mayila community people were kings of this land before Billava, Mogaveera & Bunts invaded this coastal land.

Such cast difference was prevalent and will continue unless these people take full efforts to achieve proper education and make use of the government benefits for better future and create new breed of modern human beings like all of us.     All facilities are given to them freely. As long as you give them free bees they will not develop.
    Remove all the caste based and religion based quota system. Identify the people as poor and rich and try to bring the poor up.

    I agree with you. But they lack the facility such as schools and other facilities in their area. Thats the reason they are still backward. They should be brought to the main stream and later we can treat them equally like other citizens.
