Mangalore : Airport Customs officials seize gold worth Rs 27 lacs

Mangalore, Oct 13: The officers of customs at Mangalore International Airport in another modus operandi busted gold smuggling and seized one gold bar, weighing 1,000 grams valued at Rs 27,10,000, concealed in the life jacket bag placed below the seat of the Jet Airways flight 9W531 which arrived from Dubai at 9 am on Monday, October 13.

The gold bar weighing one kg was brought by the passenger Madapalli Mammad Ismail, a resident of Napoklu, Kodagu, who arrived at Mangalore International Airport from Dubai.



Ismail boarded the flight and kept the gold below the seat. He has been arrested and produced before the judicial magistrate who remanded him to the judicial custody.

Krishna Kumar Prasad, deputy commissioner of customs, Mangalore International Airport, along with a team police team, led by superintendents HB Venkatesh, RS Venkataram, A Panduranga Naik, R G Gaonkar, K Ramakrishnan, K Nirmala and inspectors, Subhendu Ranjan Behera, Kamlesh Kumar Meena, Rajesh Jha and Havaldar Manjunath arrested the accused.

Further investigation is on under the guidance of the commissioner of customs, Mangalore.

    If you evaluate from revenue point of view, Mangalore Intl. Airport (customs) may be in the forefront among rest of the Airport customs in India. (my speculation)

    I am wondering in spite of such a heavy checking at airport,how these B*****ds are dare to bring Gold with different mode of tactics.Will they that airport officials are so fools to get away with them?I think this is a well planned racket.May be well known Jewelers in Dubai buying some people by giving some money and send them with operation ideas,and inform the airport authorities about the same and custom authorities will catch them upon their arrival and confiscate the smuggled gold and send them to jail.So that jewelers business will flourish back in Dubai and at the same time custom officials will get their share as negotiated.Otherwise how it can be carried out without the support of the authorities.At later stage jailed smuggler will be released on bail.Thereafter he can roam freely and start his business again.When corruption is rampant everywhere nowadays,we can't trust anyone.I suggest higher authorities should also keep an eagle eye on custom officials.If it is not the case,one must appreciate custom officials for their honest duty.Keep it up but beware.

    Response to Amar Nathal's question: 11 heavy weight police officers were needed to first arrest and then distribute the 1KG gold, so each gets 90 grams, not a bad bonus for arresting one!
