Mangalore: Man arrested on wedding day beaten up by jail inmates

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (RJP)

Mangalore, Oct 15: The inmates of the district jail here allegedly attacked Mohammed Ilyas (24) from Pavoor, who was arrested for demanding dowry just before his wedding was to take place three days ago.

It is said that some inmates of the district jail came to know that a person accused of cheating a woman had landed in the jail. They went to room number 3 of A block and allegedly attacked Ilyas, hitting him on his nose with a jug kept in the room.

The accused was arrested on October 12, on his wedding day for demanding dowry from the woman he was about to marry. He had reportedly demanded 70 sovereign gold and cash of Rs 5 lac if he was to proceed with the wedding. He had threatened to call off the wedding if his demands were not met. He had already taken Rs 2.5 lac for wedding expenses prior to placing the new demand, it is said.

Ilyas had apparently admitted to the offence. After his arrest, he was remanded in judicial custody.

@ vellano1 , mumbai. So far its been the case but now the TIDE is turning !. With more and more convicted inmates having crimes related against women ( most of falsely accused ) , there is gonna b majority of them in jails . Society specially jails are waking up to one sided Anti Men laws of India , its false prophecy that woman always victims . Speaking about the case , there is majority of disputed marital cases , where women take away everything leaving men penniless. Such cases are coming to limelight , so there were some proposals to amend 498 A and sensitize DV act so the even girl who gives dowry also has to be arrested .

Roshan, agree with you totally.. first off, when I say crime against women, doesnt mean high proile dowry cases... but general rape cases of women like in Badhayun, where dalit innocent girls or nirbhaya kind of girls r raped etc.. for no fault of theirs..

these Maitriya gowda or some starlet/model blaming a cop etc, is just a cheating and friendship gone wrong! they knew exactly where they were heading to...

Yes, the misuse of the law is happening cos, it was designed with such intentions.. That arrogant lady "RENUKA CHOWDHARY" is the one who drafted that bill, with general hatred towards men cos her daughter was going thru a bitter divorce.. only she got benefitted and she cld get her daughter remarried after a divorce settlement!!... however, that law punished many innocent in laws, relatives, cos it used to blame even a person remotely connected to the story, cld be arrested and put behind bar.. PEOPLE SOON TOOK THEIR REVENGE!! and SHE WAS DEFEATED HUMILIATINGLY, never to come back again in such ministry!... more story of her closeness to Hasan Ali, started coming out and today she is a just spokesperson, just cos she doesnt praise MODI!! :-D

Demand for dowry and dowry harassment cases are on the increase.

It is good to see that The Police rose to the occasion and arrested the concerned person. However it is sad to note that the inmates of the jail took law into their own hands and beat up the arrested individual. Now the police have another case of assault.

haha...good welcome.. he deserves it.. I have heard that , a new entrant will be forced to even wash seniors innerwears and do their chores in the jail.. its a new debut cricketer in test is made to field in Silly point area!!..

also I have heard, Jailates r very strict when it comes crime against women, rape, dowry etc!! good ethics they r following...

even underworld of mumbai , before entry of greedy Dawood was very ethical.. they were only smugglers, like haji mastan etc.. but never into drugs, never touched the family of opponent, no danger to women/rape etc... lekin abhi sab gadbad ho gaya..!!

May be the inmates who thrashed Mohammed Ilyas have done the only good thing(in life) that they did not take dowry from their wives. (if they are married)

Well this is how everyone is welcomed to the Jail. this is a standard procedure. If one is a noted person with high influence then they won't touch him. But if he is not then one should be ready for this treatment.

Gone are the days where the brides parents used to agree to all the demands of the groom and their parents. This is a good reference to those who live in fear that their daughters life is spoiled if the marriage is called off.

This type of incident is becoming common nowadays. There are possibilities that either the senior/regular jail mates wants the newer jail mate to do their work. If not done they attack them. Or sometimes the police personnel if they have asks them to attack a person in judicial custody if they have some personal problem with him. In judicial custody police cant beat a person, so this type of technique might have been used. Whatever may be the reason concerned person should be held responsible and taken action so that this type of incident can be avoided.
