Kasargod, Oct 16: A day after a bus which moved wayward after its brake failed and claimed two lives, injured persons Naufal (4) and Irshad (28) are recovering in a hospital at Mangalore. In the meanwhile, the police have registered cases under different sections of Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act relating to reckless driving, over speeding, causing injuries to two persons, and culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The policemen said cases were registered on the basis of a complaint filed by Aslam, brother of Abdul Nasar from Nellikuje, who was one of the ill-fated victims of the accident. The regional transport officer visited the spot and inspected the bus in question. The Kumble police have confiscated the bus and two motor bikes involved with the accident. The policemen, who are going through the records relating to the bus, said they propose to subject the bus to detailed inspection.
After the locals, who expressed displeasure at the fact that old buses bought from other states are being run on routes in the district, the buses went off the roads on Wednesday. The locals also asked the police to ensure that buses which do not have proper fitness certificates and do not comply with conditions of the transport department should not be allowed to ply in the area. The police, who rushed to the spot under the leadership of Kumble police sub-inspector, Gangadharan, after the buses were stopped by locals, held discussions with the people and assured them of undertaking strict measures.
Prakash Babu, transport department official, said that safety tests and regular inspection are being conducted on vehicles moving about in the district strictly. He said that the fitness certificate of the bus which caused the above accident would be cancelled, and more staff would be entrusted with the work of checking safety aspects of the buses.
The owners of the above bus claimed that the brake of the bus failed after its booster suddenly fell off on reaching Seethangoli, causing this accident.
