Sullia, Oct 16: Afters rumours spread like wildfire about a shop that has been running a gift scheme on Wednesday October 15 morning, a large number of customers gathered in front of the said shop, and many of them forcibly took home a number of items found inside the shop. The shop thereafter, downed its shutters.

It is said that about 4,000 people had enrolled for a gift scheme announced by the said business concern. Reportedly, some of them got lucky prizes, while others were deprived of it. Some of the customers had grown angry and impatient at the fact that the owner of the concern was not available for contact when they tried to meet him and hold discussions on the issue. This gave rise to rumours and spreading panic among those who had contributed to the above scheme.

People also had gathered in front of a showroom being run by the same concern near Vivekananda Circle in the town. Because of the chaos which ensued, policemen were posted there to supervise law and order situation.

After some of the concerns running benefit schemes failed to meet their promises, many had requested the district deputy commissioner to intervene and stop such entities from cheating the people. The deputy commissioner had in turn, asked the police department to act. Although the policemen had summoned heads of several such shops in the town thereafter and told them that obtaining permission from the deputy commissioner for running of new schemes was mandatory, it is said that more schemes continue to be announced by shops and establishments without sticking to this stipulation.
