Mangalore, Oct 16: The regional office of the directorate general of central excise intelligence, which aims at plugging leakage of central excise duty and service tax in ten districts of the state, was inaugurated on Wednesday October 15, by the local commissioner of customs, D Purushotham.

This office is located at Nanthoor circle in the city. This office will have one deputy director, three senior intelligence officers, and six intelligence officers.

Commissioner of income tax, Lakshmi Hande Puri, and commissioner of central excise and service tax, Dr M Subrahmanyam, were present. This office will work under central excise and customs board, which functions under the ministry of finance. The regional office, which will be under the control of its zonal office at Bangalore, mainly aims at finding out incidents of avoiding central excise and service taxes within its jurisdiction. Two other regional offices located at Belgaum and Kochi also function under the zonal office at Bangalore.

The regional office now opened will have jurisdiction over Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Chamarajanagara, Chikmagalur, Hassan, Kodagu, Mandya, and Shimoga revenue districts.
