Mangalore: Facelift for 43 junctions in city at a cost of Rs 15.8 crore

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (RJP)

Mangalore, Oct 18: Out of a sum of Rs. 68.3 crore sanctioned for the widening and development of roads to ease traffic congestion in the city, Rs 15.80 crore will be spent exclusively for the development of traffic junctions in the city.

22 roads and 21 junctions have been chosen to be developed to ease traffic congestion in the city. The work of improving facilities at the junctions will be taken on top priority, followed by work on the roads.

The list of the junctions that are being taken up under the above plan are as follows. Proposed expenditure for developing them is mentioned within the brackets.

Hampankatta Junction (70 lac)
Mallikatte Junction (99.79 lac)
P V S Junction (76 lac)
Bunts Hostel Junction (60 lac)
Jyothi Junction (80 lac)
Circuit House Junction (80 lac)
Kavoor Junction (99.75 lac)
Clock Tower Junction (20 lac)
Rao and Rao Junction (75 lac)
Lower Bendur Junction (99.75 lac)
Navabharath Junction (75 lac)
Kankanady Junction (99.75 lac)
Karavali Junction (99.75 lac)
Karangalpady Junction (82 lac)
Bondel Junction (99.75 lac)
Nandigudda Junction (99.75 lac)
City Hospital Junction (13 lac)
Kadri Junction (50 lac)
St Agnes Junction (21 lac)
Marnamikatta Junction (99.75 lac)
Avery Junction (80 lac)

Mangalore City Corporation has already raised funds required for this project by levying additional FAR (Floor area ratio) charges on the builders of residential and commercial buildings within the city limits by allowing them to exceed limits fixed for the respective building area. In addition to the approved FAR, there is a provision to increase the floor area by paying an additional fee. And this additional income now is proposed to be diverted towards developing roads and junctions in the city for the convenience of citizens.

Daijiworld had provided the list of proposed roads to be widened and developed on October 14.

Mr. Naik, don't you know that in Mangalore, you are supposed to live while you get old, because there is no respect for Senior Citizens in Mangalore. Even the bus/auto/Rikshaw drivers treat the elderly as a burden to the society. Govt. on thier path has prooved this by not constructing footpaths or road crossing at regular intervals for the citizens. We cann't even handle a small district like DK. We have huge army of Corporators, who cann't be seen or heard after the elections are over. Is our administration so bad. To worsen the situation, there is gang wars and robbery going on every day in Mangalore. What is our police dept. doing about this. Citizens pay huge sums of money to the govt. in the form of Tax but instead of developing the place, MCC is developming their Vanara Sene which is absolute bunch of jokers. Is this is the reason why we pay taxes and elect corporators?

First of all the city and interstate bus drivers should be sent to road manners orientation. Traffic cops should be educated and given training on their duties and not simply standing in the crowded area. More traffic police force need to be injected to the department. In the last 50 over years, Mangalore could not could not make any development wereas even countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand has moved much more faster pace than us. Don't we have experts to give some advice on how to handle crowded junctions and roads. Spending crores and crores of Rupees, which is citizens tax money in the name of development should stop. Bring in experts to find a trial run on a few congested junctions. Putting up traffice light is not the solution for such congestions. Every penny coproration spends on development need to be accounted and given justification to the Tax payers.

    Facelift is all farce.

Throwing mud in our the eyes of the electorate.

Lets go back about 12 years or so.

Traffic lights were installed at K'kandy, Bendore, Balmatta, Kadri, Kaikamba, Bunts Hostel etc etc, How many days have they worked / functioned??? 'Zero'. Half the time there is no power / electricity!!! Finally after spending all the money probably 4 times more the actual cost which actually filled a few pockets, most of these junctions are now manned by traffic police!!! Great what a face lift???

I think a face lift is warranted of the Corporators, who run Mangalore city corporation. There is no vision for these fatties. First oaf all provide sanitation, clean water, sewage treatment, garage collection and management. foot paths, proper bus services and the list goes on and on. These useless corporators need to be educated in civic administration, These people ruined mangalore with unplanned concrete jungle with a vision or planning.

    a sad story.

FIRST THING THE DRIVING DECENCY IS NOT THERE IN MANGALORE OR WHOLE OVER INDIA I CAN SAY...THATS THE MAIN REASON ROAD BLOCKS. SECOND THING, IN THIS ROAD DEVELOPMENT PROCESS & PROJECTS,... HOW MANY LACS EXPENSES SPENT & HOW MANY CRORES TRANSFERED TO SWISS BANK...? THIS IS ONE BRILLIANT PLANS & IDIAS TO MAKE MONEY BY CREATING THE PROJECTS BUT NOT DOING THE PROPER WORK. LOOK AT SURATHKAL FLY OVER & KOTTARA FLY OVER WHERE ITS END. THESE ARE THE DANGEROUS ENDS NOT PROPERLY CONNECTED THOUGH SPENT HUGE PUBLIC AMOUNT, WITH VERY WRONG DESIGNS & PLANS. AFTER SPENDING SO MUCH WHY THEY DIRECTED TO ONLY ONE WAY...? DOES IT MAKING ANY SENSE...? 420 OFFICERS, TOWN PLANNERS REALIZE THIS...? THEY WERE BETTER AS IT IS WITHOUT FLY OVER. I REQUEST TO MAKE PROPER PLANS , DO FISSIBLE STUDY, RE WORK, ASK PUBLIC OPINIONS & IMPLEMENT SO THAT MONEY SPENT ON THE PROJECTS NOT TO GO IN VAIN...!!!

It is mentioned 'Facelift". What are the proposed improvements? Is it going to be signalized Junctions? Before any improvements are planned TIS(traffic impact Study) should be carried out, based on that analysis Improvements should be planned, otherwise it is waste of money.Installing some new tiles, making left/right turns/islands will not solve the problems in the long run. There is no use spending money on "cosmetic' changes. The money allotted looks very little if REAL solutions for long term traffic problems are to be found, then Corporation should hire professional Consultants with Traffic Engineering Expertise to devise a master plan for whole Mangalore City for TRIP( Traffic and Road Improvement program) Only with that Master plan long term permanent solutions can be achieved, other wise 15.8 crore is waste of money and unnecessary inconvenience to public while these cosmetic short term improvements are made.

Indeed the roads and road junctions very badly need improvements and it is good to see that a decision in the right directions has been taken. The prevailing width of roads can hardly take the traffic which has grown tremendously during the past few years.

It is a nightmare to drive through some of the junctions during the peak hours and the movement of traffic is made more difficult by some careless bus and auto-rickshaw drivers.

Parallel parking by buses and dangerous overtaking by auto-rickshaws are some of the areas which badly need to be corrected. There is a paucity of Traffic Police force and I am sure The Commissioner of Police is giving a serious thought to find ways and means of arranging better traffic control and indeed the people of Mangalore should go forward with constructive IDEAS to improve the grave situation.

Mr J R Lobo, Mr Mahabala Marla you must come on the Bikarnakatte Shaktinagar road. I have ssen Mayor Marla commuting on this road but he seems hardly bothered. The past four months were like a nightmare travelling on this road either in vehicles or walking. Just a few frolongs away from Bikarnakatte there is almost big pond and during rainy season crossing this pond for pedestrians was a herculean task. The corporation concretised half the road and half is left. The people travelling from here suffered for almost more than a year just for completing about 400 meteres of road. Now how long are we going to suffer like this. What are the area corporators doing.

it is an irony that when funds are allotted to most junctions the city corporation thought it fit not to improve the major and most congested Nanthoor junction. it is an irory how the traffic will be eased in the city when its major junction connecting 3 highways in a deplorable condition. i think the present dispensation wanted a way out to make money before the term expires and the work.
