Mangalore, Oct 18: National president of National Women's Front (NWF), Shahida Aslam, felt that the support being extended by some so called progressive thinkers to the idea of legalizing prostitution happens to be an insult to the civilized society.

She was speaking after inaugurating publicity campaign for the national women's conference being organized under NWF at Coimbatore in November this year, backed by the concept of awakening women to their rights, at a programme held in the city on Friday October 17.

Shaida, who stressed that women are not merchandise, expressed displeasure at efforts being made to turn them into commodities of trade. Noting that atrocities on women are taking newer shapes, she called upon women to get united, assert their rights, and fight for their protection, duly reminding them that legal recourse is not the only way to achieve this purpose.

State president of NWF, Fatima Naseema, presided over the programme. NWF national committee member, Shahida Tasneem, delivered keynote address. Poet, Jyoti Guruprasad, Beary Sahitya Academy member, Zohara Abbas, Flavia D'Souza from Catholic Sabha, researcher from Dr B R Ambedkar Research and Extension Centre, Padmashree T, and others were present.

Achievers in the fields of education, literature and social service were felicitated on the occasion.
