Hubli, Oct 19: A grandson who killed his grandmother in connection with gold has been arrested.
The retired teacher Lilavathi Laxmana Poojara (74) is the deceased. The arrested person is Sridhara Manjappa. Another accused Basavaraja has also been arrested. The crime had taken place at Ranebennur in Haveri district on Thursday.
The accused Sridhara was given some gold jewellery by his distantly related grandmother worth Rs.75,000 which he pledged with a bank. When payments were not made in time, the bank sold the jewellery to recover the loan amount. When the grandmother came to know about it, she demanded money for which Sridhar paid her Rs.20, 000.
But the grandmother persistently kept on reminding Sridhar about the balance. Disturbed by the developments, Sridhar hatched to kill her and called her home. Then with the help of his friend Basavaraja he took her in a car towards Haveri. They duo killed the old lady by strangulation and threw her dead body into the nearby bushes. Before that they made sure to steal the jewellery on her body. Then they pledged the gold jewellery with a local finance company for Rs.70, 000.
The police only took only two days to solve the mystery and apprehended the culprits.
