Mangalore, Oct 20: Rain accompanied by thunder and lightning continued to pound several parts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts late evenings and nights of Saturday and Sunday.
Prashanth (14), son of the late Siddu living at Kavaligudde House in Golidadda near Naravi in Beltangady taluk died due to lightning on Saturday October 18 evening. His mother, Radha, suffered injuries and was admitted into the government hospital in Karkala.
A cow belonging to the family too perished in this incident. Tahildar of Beltangady, Putta Shetty, who visited the residence of this illfated family on Saturday and Sunday, promised to release eligible amount of compensation within a week. He explained that compensation of Rs 1.5 lac will be released after receipt of postmortem report from veterinary doctor on the deceased cow, and copy of first information report from police department relating to the boy's death. He said there is no provision to release funds for injured persons in law.
Several trees got uprooted in Bantwal taluk, while the walls of the residence of a person named Herpagatti Sadhu Moolya near Nandalike in Karkala taluk developed cracks due to lightning.
Fallen tree damaged the roof of a house belonging to Nadubettu Poovappa Poojary in Nandalike. A cow valued at about Rs 15,000 died after lightning struck the cowshed of Dodmane Sanjeeva Shetty in Miyar, Nalkur village near Brahmavar in Udupi district.
Houses were damaged and power connections burnt down in some houses in Kasargod districts too. In one such incident, Jayashree, wife of Somanath living in Harimale in Kadambar, his sister, Pushpavathi, and children became unconscious for sometime after lightning struck their home, inflicting vertical crack on the wall of their home and burning down wiring.
Sakleshpur and nearby areas in Hassan also received rain.
