Dire state of wires in Belman - A disaster waiting to happen?

R B Jagadish
Daijiworld Media Network – Karkala (RJP)

Karkala, Oct 24: You would have probably heard the expression 'all hell broke loose' which means happening of an incident thats terrible or chaotic. In Belman, God forbid, if it were to happen, it would be 'all wires broke loose', but the effect would be similar.

Believe it or not, electricity wires above Belman town seem to be on the verge of falling. High tension and low tension, both types of wires are seen here.

A close look at the wires reveals that these wires are joined. That they are joined at five points within a distance of 5 meters is clearly visible. Even the small, thin wires used to keep the electricity carrying big wires together, are about to loosen and fall off any time.

Wires carrying electricity should not be joined like this at least in thickly populated areas. Normally, iron mesh is used underneath the wires in other places by Mescom, but surprisingly it is not implemented in Belman.

When the first monsoon rains arrived this year, these wires had fallen off. But timely information to Mescom by the bus agents and local traders saved the town from disaster. But what the Mescom personnel did was only to join the wires and go back.

"I have brought this to the attention of Mescom and I have also raised this issue in taluk panchayat meetings. But now I have learnt from Mescom that Karkala-Padubidri road repair will start in Belman very soon and the Mescom has decided to change the wires and poles during this time." says Xavier D’Mello, the taluk panchayat member.

In the meantime, one hopes that the wires will continue to hang on.

Almost 50% of Human Life is hanging on the thread in Mangalore.
    1. Check almost every junction boxes on street light Poles which are open. Wires are exposed for Children to touch and die.
    2. Check the long arm Street Lights ready to fall and kill Public walking under it.
    3. Check the street light turning on boxes. Wires are hanging and the Guy who comes on Bike touches two wires together to turn on street lights. How stupid this can be. There is one such box near the Martis Road Junction in Mallikatta.
    4. Look at the guide wires which are holing the poles on position. Wires are rusted and ready to snap off. Green vines are crawling and ready to touch live wires.
    5. Mescom employees use Hand first before using the Head. Check those fuse handles on foot paths ready to crack open Public's Head. One such dangerous Handle is near Shreenivas Hotel Gate in Hampankatta.
    6. Check a box near Kadri Police station, near bus stop. Ready to fall and throw the area in dark.
    7. Look some of the poles which are tilted and weight is hanging on live wires.
    8. Check some of the Transformer banks for brain dead work.

    Bhandarkar,
It seems you are trying to remind one of those famous Newtons laws taking rounds in MIT in 80s
'Length' of the wire is proportional to the height of the 'pole' provided 'thrust' .........is kept constant
    Or something like that

@Jossey S.Mumbai, that doesnt mean that you stop of hoping .Thats what we Indians are used to do.and do we have other means ?Mescom waits till some mess happens and will come to see first, then decision is taken then send someone to repair ,at the end roads are repaired but wires are not yet come ordered.we will do soonbefore next rain Comes.Till then poor man must wait under elektrocuted wire.UNLESS you have some Money to "DO"it.Thats why our India is not forwarding like other countrys.I cant understand why tree branches touching wire,or surroundings are not yet cut?

    Dear Rita, Germany,
Our Country will never prosper as far as we have most corrupt & lazy people in Panchayat, Muncipality & in Corporations. I have seen in Australia that Civic Agency people daily go around the city, to cut the branches of the tree that come in between electrical wires of street lights. They will fix the broken slabs of footpaths, fill the potholes of roads without many complaints from residents. Our most lazy civic agency people will only ask for bribes & money. Yesterday my mother-in-law from nearby Belman Complained to us that there was no power supply for more than 12 hours. She also told me that near by Panchayat man's house had uninterrepted power supply as he has a Generator. Request neibours of Xavier D'mellow's house to see how he has well maintained his house & check any wires r dangling on top of his house.

@Jacob M.Bangalore.problems in India and Mescom is,electric wires are "pulled"at and in every direction. They have no specific Position like in western or developed countrys.and they are not placed Underground in a huge pipes like.Thats the main Problem. In his direction if they had paid some Attention before reaching Mars would have more useful to civilization. Here for example, house owner has to see that no tree branch is Extended towards roads and wires if at all(in agriculture Areas).otherwise officials are taking care of this matter without failand complaining. In Belman there was a lineman who was taking care that his own meter was always still stand had.but had elektric always.

It is noticed everywhere that public safety is completely neglected. Responsible people wake up only after precious lives are lost. Till then they have the 'chalta hai' attitude. When spending unnecessary amounts on useless things why can't the authorities provide public safety?

Thanks for Mr.Jagadish for highlighting the irresponsible work from MESCOM.

May be this work wont finish until that child finish its SSLC. How can a Panchayath member giving a irresponsible answers on Electric Wires. If any electrical accident happens before road repair, is it Mr. D'mello ready to take its responsibility...?
Where Congers, BJP & other left parties chelas. When election is there, you all ready to clean the public toilets & after election you people cant trun your eyes on public safety..
Better Belman public file an case on MESCOM & Panchayath Members to show our unity on public safety..

As per the theory If the wires are joined correctly . the joint place is more stronger than other place of the whole length of wire.
