Mangalore, Oct 26: New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) is scouting for a suitable site to set up a proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in the port premises at Panambur near here, Devadatta Bose, executive engineer (civil), NMPT has said.

Although the port has identified three possible sites, the proposed terminal in all likelihood may be set up on the south side of the southern breakwaters at the port, he noted.

Delivering a talk on "feasibility of LNG terminal at New Mangalore Port" organised by the Institution of Engineers, Mangalore local centre and other organisations here on Tuesday, Bose said the project was estimated at Rs 710 crore excluding the cost needed to set up the pipeline and the storage tank facilities.

The project would require a minimum of 36 months to be completed, he said. Authorities at NMPT and other potential users of the project such as ONGC, Tanirbhavi Power Project, Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers and Zuari Agro have recently negotiated with a delegation from Qatar on sourcing LNG from that nation.

The proposed LNG terminal at NMP will be of 5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) capacity with plans to upgrade its capacity to 10 mtpa in the second phase, he added.
