Mamatha Poojary, Sandhya Pai, Jaya Suvarna among Rajyotsava Award winners

Bangalore, Oct 30: Five persons hailing from the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are among the winners of 59th Karnataka Rajyotsava Awards, announced here on Thursday October 30. As many as 59 persons have been chosen for the award this year.

Kabaddi pro Mamatha Poojary, whose team recently won gold in the Asian Games, senior journalist Sandhya Sathish Pai, Jaya C Suvarna from Mulky residing in Mumbai, Vanase Narayana Ganiga from Udupi district and Sampaje Sheenappa Rai from Dakshina Kannada district are among the recipients.

Athlete Poovamma from Kodagu who studied in Mangalore and who won the gold in Asian Games, singer S Janaki, ISRO retires scientist Dr Kasturi Rangan, Justice Venkatachaliah are some of the other awardees.

Literatteur Channavira Kanavi, Dr Baraguru Ramachandrappa, Marulasiddappa and H G Siddaramaiah were in the selection committee.

More than 1700 applications were received for the award. Even some of those who had not applied have also been considered, taking into account their achievements.

Literature, drama, music, Yakshagana, sports and cinema are some of the 15 fields for which the awards are being.

The awards will be presented on November 1 at Ravindra Kalakshethra at 6.30 pm on the occasion of Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations.

Vanase Narayana Ganiga from Udupi district and Sampaje Shinappa Rai from Dakshina Kannada district get the awards in the Yakshagana and Bayalata category. Dr Sandhya Satish Pai from Udupi district gets the award in the media category.

Mamatha Poojary from Hermunde village near Karkala has been chosen in the sports category. She was part of the Kabaddi team that won the gold in the recent Asian Games and captained the team that won the women's Kabaddi World Cup in 2012. She is a also an Arjuna Award recipient.

Jaya C Suvarna gets the award under the non-resident Kannadiga category. Jaya Suvarna originally hailing from Mulky is a prominent Billava leader from Mumbai. He is the president of All India Billava Federation and executive president of Bharat Cooperative Bank, Mumbai.

    Hearty congratulations to all the recipients of Karnataka Rajyotsava Award.By the by as one of the commentators suggested defence personnel,who are sacrificing/sacrificed their lives should have been considered for this coveted award.Only because of them we are living fearlessly.

    Is there any Rajyotsava award for defence personnel who sacrificed their lives Nothing at all. only sports personnel. Why?????????? Defence personnel are they not resident of Karnataka.

    they have a crazy system..! "You have to apply to get an award, urself.. and give the justification"... its illogical. the moment I write, an application,that award has lost the purpose, in my opinion..
