Chitradurga, Nov 3: “The state government will recommend the centre to award capital punishment to rapists. Since the states do not have the powers to enact laws, we can only appeal to the central government,” Minister for Women and Child Welfare Umashree said on Sunday in Chitradurga.

Umashree who was in Chitradurga to attend a state level meeting of Sthree Shakti Sanghas, was besieged by the members of the district unit of the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat (ABVP), in front of the Zilla Panchayat auditorium. The members handed her a memorandum demanding capital punishment to rapists.

Umashree compared the rapists to wild beasts and said that ever since the Congress government came to power in Karnataka, the police had been warned to handle such cases with an iron hand.
