Sullia: 299 devotees take part in Made Made Snana

Daijiworld Media Network - Sullia (SP)

Sullia, Nov 26: In spite of raging controversy over the issue, and disregarding protests by those who brand the ritual as outdated and superstitious, 299 devotees performed Made Made Snana at Sri Subrahmanyeshwara Temple, Subrahmanya in the taluk, on the first day of Champa Shashti festival on Tuesday November 25.

After the Mahapuja in the afternoon, food was served in the outer precincts of the temple. After the concerned consumed food, devotees who had taken a vow to perform the said service to the Lord rolled over the banana leaves containing left overs. They included women, men and children, belonging to various castes and regions.

This time around, the temple surroundings was enveloped in serenity, as the devotees were assured of being allowed to fulfill their vows as per the high court verdict delivered recently unlike last year.

As several organizations had given a call for protest and awareness campaigns against the above ritual, police personnel were present in large numbers to stop any untoward incident from happening. The first day of the festival however passed off peacefully.

There had been question mark on the continuance of this traditional method of austerity performed by devotees, after various organizations and thinkers alike had called for enforcing a ban on the ritual, terming it as a kind of caste-based discrimination.

In its order dated Wednesday November 19, the state HC said Made Made Snana Snana can be performed at Subrahmanya temple for three days from November 25 to 27 (Margasheera Shuddha Chowti to Shashti) when the annual car festival is held.

people are hurt at fellow people who perform these stupid rituals because, these rituals are discriminatory and sends a message that some people are more equal than others. These types of rituals create people of slavery mindset. Such a mindset is not healthy for the society at large. it seems to me that practice of un-touchability was a product of creating such mindset. this practice was also being followed for many many years and was peaceful too.

    1. It is false that lower caste people are made to roll over food eaten by Brahmins. My Friend who is a Brahmin who lives in Ernakulam in Kerala comes every year and does this. So all castes do it
    2. When Govt banned it Brahmins didnt go to court to restart it. Who went to court? whwy blame Brahmins? Just because they dont violently protest in street?

The only way we can stop this practice by forcing the temple management to allow all caste people to sit together when food is served in the outer precincts of the temple...If the supporters of this practice here in this forum can not support this move to allow all caste people to eat together then they are pure hypocrites...

I do not believe in this practice as well. However we are speaking of discrimination , is this the only way we are discriminated in our temples?

What about the different seating arrangements for Brahmins and others in the dining area? Why are the so called upper class being made to sit separately from the rest of us?

This is also discrimination and needs to be removed. We are hindus and need to be treated alike in our place of worship.

Mohandas Sir, in that context of faith and following some bizarre rituals, I would like to hear your comment on the "Devadasi" system which is still prevalent, and so many other such rituals like 'Bhanamati', which is rampantly practiced in Maharastra mostly to usurp family property!!!

Man should evolve with times and not follow blind rituals degrading humans!!

Just imagine if one were to go back just 1000 years back in time with a mobile phone and talk, people during those times would definitely think he is a God, is it not!!

It is high time, we bring up our children in a rational and scientific temper and encourage them to wonder and question rather than thrust on them blind faith and silly rituals!!

It is not the question of faith, but simple logic, why would any miracle happen by doing this degrading ritual???

Man should evolve as technology and science explore newer ideas!!

There are said to be billions of galaxies much much bigger than our solar systems, how do you know somewhere some very very intelligent aliens are not living!! In today's Deccan Herald a famous scientist has predicted that Mars was actually annihilated by some alien forces by nuclear bombs, before it was just like Earth!!

Nobody, has ever come with proof of hell or heaven so simply do acts as per your highest level of conscience and uprightness and leave the rest to Nature, you will definitely get attract good and get the heavenly rewards (if at all they are there) if your acts on this journey were good to humanity upright!!

In that context, it should be as simple as "Life is my Religion, and my Deeds are my Prayers"!!

Why and what basis do you think God, the all pervasive and divine, can ever be 'exclusive' he is all inclusive (for him right from a speck of dust to the largest animal are same), he has to take care of the 'entire universe' without bothering about anything, just like the Sun, the giver of life on Earth, he rises without fail as per his duty, sets and goes, he is not bothered who is doing what, he does his said duty is goes, so also Mother Nature (God) is all inclusive he cannot be exclusive like how we greedy humans are: me, my wife, kids, family, friends etc.!!!

Made-Made Snana is a performed by all Caste people & yesterday too all have participated. No one force them to do so, & it is Devotees out of their own faith they do it. When someone had forced them to stop it, they have gone to High Court & got clearence. Those who never believe in these should never interefere in the faith & devotion of Devotees who wish to do so.

STan, is it "liberalism" that makes you say so..? You get happy when two of our saints get Sainthood..cos they have "performed some miracle"..and you reject it when some other faith beleives in these things? .... And what is the ratio of "white skinned saints and other skins"? atlast, they believed few Indians can also perform Miracles is it?

You must not reject others faith in blanket statements! It may hurt others too :)

Well said Vellano. There is nothing called Miracle if we deeply think. It is personal faith in which devotees have cure people and that is what is working in any religious retreats of any clan. As long as it does not hurt anyone nor it is pushed into any community or person no one should have a problems withit. If questions have to be raised everyone can raise questions on all religion. first of all belief in any religion itself is a very big superstitious which may need a ban in future. we must be spiritual and not religious. Until we have broader consensus on the subject it is good for the country to allow people to practice their own faith within the framework of public peace and not violating Human rights.

Few years back Benny Hin came to b'luru saying that he will cure the diseases thru prayer. What do you say about that? Even now there are so many pastors or some one who conducts these kind of programs in and around b'luru.
