Pak anti-terrorism court awards 26-year jail term to actress Veena Malik, husband

Islamabad, Nov 26 (IANS): An anti-terrorism court in Pakistan Tuesday awarded 26-year jail term to owner of the country's major media group for airing "blasphemous contents" during a TV programme.

The court ordered the arrest of Mir Shakil ur Rehman, the owner the Jang group of publications. The group owns "Geo television" and the English daily "The News", Xinhua reported.

The court in Gilgit-Baltistan also announced jail term for known actress Veena Malik, her husband Asad Malik and Shayesta Lodhi, who had hosted the controversial programme.

None of the accused were present in the court at the time of the announcement of the verdict.

Judge Raja Shehbaz Khan also imposed a penalty of 1.3 million Pakistani rupees(about $12,500)each on all the convicts, who have the right to appeal against the judgment.

Waqar Ahmad, secretary to the judge, told the media the court ordered the local administration to confiscate properties of the convicts if they did not surrender to the authorities.

All convicts are believed to have gone abroad.

A petition, filed in May this year, had stated that the convicts had "used derogatory language for "committing blasphemy by airing objectionable contents" against the family of the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad.

Officials said all convicts can file appeal against the verdict in the chief court in Gilgit-Baltistan, which is equal to a high court.

Geo television had aired the controversial morning show May 14 that had prompted criticism from religious circles. The TV had publicly apologised over the programme and also published apology in the group's English and Urdu newspapers.

The programme was aired to celebrate the wedding of famous film and TV drama actress Veena Malik.

The management later said the host had unintentionally committed a mistake in the programme namely "Wuthu Jago Pakistan", which means wake up Pakistan. Religious groups had also staged rallies against the media group.

Just a few days back I happened to meet a Pakistani from a minority community who sadly confessed to me that he hadn't visited his native place for the past 8 years because he's not sure whether he will come back as a result of the deteriorating law and order situation in his country, especially because of the inhuman treatment of minorities in Pakistan.

Guilty need to be punished but indeed the guilt in the case of these people the punishment meted to them is disproportionate to the so called crime and certainly does not call for a long term imprisonment. Hope the higher court reviews the judgement and modifies it.

Terrorists are roaming the streets freely while the anti-terrorism court is busy sentencing Veena Malik to jail 26 years. The verdict is from a provincial court that's unrecognized by rest of Pak.Still it is not too bad as punishment for blasphemy case in pakistan is burning alive by the mob. Only hope for Veena Malik in avoiding jail is to now become a Kashmiri separatist.Existence of This country is a big joke.

She deserves this Punishment. The growing satanic cults like feminism can set very dangerous trend destroying families worldwide. Religion has reasons , making mockery of peaple associated with it , is a sick mentality and attracts severe punishment. India also need such laws to silence ' sickular ' mindsets.

Few weeks back, a young christian couple was burned to death, for alleged 'Blasphemy'. Some villagers had deliberately accused the couple for burning the copies of a sacred book. Enraged..the mob of 600 armed men barged into the couples hut, tore it down, beat and dragged them into the street, later the insane mob threw both of them to a blast furnace used for in brick lane, reducing them to ashes. This is a genocide, a horrifying incident, and Pakistan society is unapologetic for it.

'Blasphemy Law' has become a tool in the hands of Fanatics to allege and murder minorities in this disgraceful land of Pakistan. PM Nerendra Modi and all other gangs of Aman Ki Asha need to address this 'Inhuman Law' of Pakistan, before extending their generous arms and embracing Pakistan.Pakistan had over 1500 suicide attacks that claimed over 25000 lives in the past two years, and none has been convicted in their courts!!! And here they take on Veena Malik..Ridiculous...

Human make mistakes, I think this mistake was done unfortunately, 26 years jail and 1.3 million penalties is totally unacceptable. People are involved in major crimes like mass killing, robbery etc. etc. for which the Pakistani government is doing nothing. May be government is taking some personal grudge.

Actually the presiding judge would have been influenced by ISI. Geo TV is Pakistan's liberal media TV, and one of its anchors was targeted and had a failed assassination bid on him. He went on the media that ISI wanted to finish him, for which now the owners of Geo TV are being targeted as punishment. Nobody f....ks with ISI in pakistan as they hold the country's powers not Nawaz Sharif.
