Church fire: Delhi Archbishop leads over 1,000 Christians to police HQ

New Delhi, Dec 3 (The Indian Express): More than a 1,000 of Delhi’s Christians and their supporters blocked the main access to the police headquarters during rush hour on Tuesday morning, demanding action against the alleged “culprits” behind Monday’s church fire.

The sit-in blocked traffic on the key road leading to East Delhi for nearly three hours.

The burning of the St Sebastian Catholic Church in Dilshad Garden on Monday morning has rattled the city’s Catholic community, right up to the Archbishop of Delhi, Anil Couto, who has called it “arson”. The police, however, have not confirmed it as a wilful act and all angles, including a short-circuit, are being probed.

The protesters from various Christian communities took ground in front the police headquarters blocking the road for any vehicle movement.

Protesters from Delhi and NCR converged on the police headquarters at ITO following a message spread through mobile phones and community meetings held in different parishes on Monday. The protest was peaceful.

By 10 am, about a 1,000 people had completely taken over the stretch outside the police building. Holding placards, they chanted slogans and sang songs. “Church Burning = Nation Burning” read one placard. “We know we are a minority but don’t treat us like one,” read another.

“There has been a spate of attacks on our places of worship and on us in different parts of the country. However, the burning of our parish’s church is a big blow. We had to come out and protest or else atrocities against us minorities is never going to stop,” Ayushi Minj, 20, a protester from Dilshad Garden, said.

A traffic police officer said, “The sit-in caused a snarl at the ITO for over two hours at the peak time. Vikas Marg was closed and traffic was diverted to Outer Ring Road and DDU Marg. Traffic normalised only after the protesters dispersed around 12.30 pm.”

Police kept the gates of its headquarters tightly barricaded against the protesters. Archbishop Couto and some high priests were allowed in to meet police chief B S Bassi. The Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Deepak Mishra came out and addressed the gathering.

“We understand you are aggrieved and we are doing everything in our power. We assure you of a thorough investigation into the matter,” he said.

Couto later informed the gathering that police had agreed to most of their demands, including a department probe into delay in action after the fire and in setting up a special investigation team to probe the matter.

The crowds dispersed only after they were told that the Archbishop’s delegation was going to submit their demands to Lt-Governor Najeeb Jung.

Govt to set up SIT, may rebuild church

Lt-Governor Najeeb Jung on Tuesday announced that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by a Joint Commissioner will be set up to probe the fire in St Sebastian’s Church in Dilshad Garden, Northeast Delhi.

Meanwhile, police said the case would be transferred to the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police and would be investigated under Joint Commissioner Ravinder Yadav. Police said they were still awaiting reports from the Fire and the Forensic departments.

A delegation led by the Delhi Archbishop met the commissioner on Tuesday. Earlier, the delegation had forwarded a memorandum listing a set of demands — including a judicial probe into the fire — to the Home Minister and the Prime Minister.

Addressing protesters at ITO , Dr John Dayal, former national president of All India Catholic Union, said, “Police have promised us that they will write to the L-G about notifying the Public Works Department for the reconstruction of St Sebastian Church.”

Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Deepak Mishra said, “Police will be keeping extra vigil over churches across the city, especially till Christmas.”

Father Mathew Koyickal, Chancellor (Archdiocese of Delhi), said, “The fire broke out around 6 am on Monday, but local police reached three hours later. Secondly, police were saying it was an accident. But the strong stench of kerosene at the church points to arson. Thirdly, the forensics teams reached the church around 5 pm. This is why we are so angry.”

Oppn chorus in Lok Sabha: Fire was planned

The fire that destroyed a church in Northeast Delhi found mention in Lok Sabha on Tuesday, with ministers condemning the incident. While the Opposition claimed that the fire was “planned” with “an intention to make it a communal issue”, the government assured that the incident would be thoroughly probed.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, P Karunakaran (CPI-M) alleged that police reached the spot several hours after fire broke out in the wee hours of Monday. Maintaining that the church and its exhibits were completely damaged and burnt down, he claimed it was “a planned attempt and not an accident”. “The intention is to turn it into a sensitive communal issue,” he said.

Members of various Opposition parties, including the Congress, joined Karunakaran in condemning the incident. The CPI-M leader said several MPs had gone to the spot on Monday and spoken to the people there.

Speaking of the incident, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said it was “very serious”. “The incident is condemnable…,” he said. Naidu said he would urge Home Minister Rajnath Singh to order a probe and inform the House.

What a Bunch of loser comments in this forum on Religion, for one I need to know who started any religion?! in the first place , I guess no one, People who are holding on to some " Religion" are mentally disturbed and challenged, all the religions promise you something after you are Dead so why not die and get it ... go ahead follow your Religion and die!!Religion is made by people to find social comfort and security, then Religious “Leaders" manipulated their "Religion" for their own benefits of Power (political) Wealth and Carnal desires (Sex).
There has been enough evidence of this among all the Religions Either Majority or Minority then what kind of religion are you losers backing and for what motives?!! Please be enlightened all are using you for their own benefits by convincing you it for your own Good!! If your God has everything and created everything why does he beg money from humans?!!If you have Faith and Trust on almighty God then he is always in control he does not require your interference to do his job!!
Did anyone have a choice to choose his parents or his Religion by birth?!! All have been born innocently and reared by persons of certain agenda and biased views taught by their elders!! Be humans first if you cannot Love a person whom you can see and feel, how you can ever Love ‘God’ who no one has seen!! 1 John 4:20

    Enough is enough.

The Christians were persecuted all over India in varying degree, and now the burning of the Church at the Capital is showing far greater trouble ahead of us.

The Christians are defenseless people, so the street wayward rowdies feel very safe to run over them.

The Christians will not destroy Government properties like buildings and bus-cars etc but it is high time to show our pain to the whole world that we are mistreated in our country of birth for our religious faith.

Can these devils who are tormenting the Christians and blaming the converted Christians for changing religion, how many of them are engaged in terrorism and killing after their conversion? Are they peace loving after their conversion?

They simply pray to GOD at homes and Churches. Persecuting them for praying and singing peacefully, what a cruelty is that?

    Mr.Mathew,USA
I have seen your comments in this forum generally portray moderate views. Here in this case of church burning be it RCs or otherwise it is not an issue.Issue is burning of a worshipping place is a heinous crime and not only christians but people of from all religions are aggrived.Worshiping place is a worshiping place be it a emple, basadi, church or masjid. This should not have happened.Good that SIT is formed and now the aggrived should pressurise for the probe outcome in quickest possible time.I do understand the anguish of christians but at the same time I am astonished to see that the news has not evoked the public attention or debate evn in tv media as it should.Even politicians who always prtend to be champians of minorities for vote bank purpose haver come forward.Oscar Fernandes,Rahul Gandhi,Sonia Gandhi etc have not even visited the site which I was expected. No stratements from Congress leaders also.As I see the post disaster seneario now,I strongly suspect this is done for polarising in view of forthcoming elections to Delhi ,Nortyh Eastern state,JK etc.,Reason may be obvious to creaye a fear amongst minorities that BJP is dangerous for them.In that case just imagine who may be culprit?Since probe has ordered now one should wait for the result.I asm sure the police will expose those responsible for the incident if it was a man made.Till then better not to hurl allegations against any political outfit or people which may scuttle the process of probe.Dont try to hurt majority community on assumptions. We have no problem is you people do not vote for BJP but dont accuse without reason with is premature. The accident is it is amn made needs to be condemned in strongest terms.Inn that it is imperative that govt should come clean on probe findings and rebuild the chruch with honour and speedily.

It is a crime and law and order has to take care without any bias that is why India is a secular democratic nation. If you don't understand then don't comment bias ways. We really don't care anyone as long as they don't attack Jesus and don't tell us how to run our house.

Sir, your comment specifically stating that my comments are of moderate tone is greatly appreciated.

I don't believe in revenge and retaliation on the other hand, when innocent people are mistreated by the strong sections of the community, then I will stand with the weaker sections through any energy I have.

When the politicians use religion for their political gains, that is totally unethical. Religion is a personal choice of every individual in the world, and we must respect the personal liberty of every individual. If I feel that the religion of somebody is destroying them, then I have an ethical responsibility to tell him or her a better way of getting peace and happiness, and that must be done in due respect and love.

For a very long time, I am writing comments in the Daijiworld and I am very cautious, not to offend anybody, but simply speaking the truth and conviction I have very openly for keeping the rights of the minorities.

Whatever Mr. Modi is trying to do to make India prosperous and to raise the poorest sections of the society, whatever he is trying to do erase corruption and red tape from the system, I am standing with him 101%. But, when his party members create discord in the society, then I do respectfully expect from him to stand for righteousness.

There was a speaker in the month of November here in Mangalore who spoke on communalism in the guise of "corruption and terrorism". These type of people are actually instigating this hate in the society. All he wants is to show off to his audience, saying "I did this" and "I did that" and everyone goes crazy, and he is famous and happy with his egotism. I don't have a problem with my Hindu neighbors who are very sweet and nice, but on the national level there is a division based on religion, which I don't understand. These individuals do these hate speeches for gaining popularity and flattery.

my prediction is bjp will win 60 out of 70 seats as people
in delhi vote for the govt which is ruling in centre
as delhi is entirly dependent on centre for managing all its affairs.

This is called 'Storm in a Tea cup'. This is an outrage without substantial evidence. Yes, there could be Arson and malicious intents in this incident, but the community leaders need to make statements with certain amount of restraint.

Reactionary retorts and blaming the central government, and its leader as the catalyst for such hate-mongering incidents is not wise in part of community leadership.

In a democratic society, its nice to see people coming out into the streets for a all out demonstration demanding justice. But at the same breath, the Archbishop and other minority activist need to spare a thought for fellow Christians, sikhs and hindus in the neighboring Pakistan, where they have been persecuted and murdered every single day, without receiving slightest solidarity from India.

    One observation:
Modi uses ferocious language against non hindutva vadis during election campaign to polarise votes - then, now and also in future. Coming to power is his sole aim.

He may not mean harm once in power at all - hopefully.

His audience, takes his words without reading between the lines and start implementing it on the ground - bringing discredit to their own leader, also troubling their own leader's administration.

So, it is a catch 22 situation for Modi. He has to blast out during public speeches to polarize majority and has to reverse it while on power because he will be shamed internationally for his policies, if they are not inclusive.

So, what goes up, comes down. corollary - who sent up, also bring down!

Non-compassionate stand of few in this forum, make me revolt against Modi, though I was watching his administration with honesty for performance.

I am too believe is Sarva-Dhrama and whenever I pass through Siddivinayak temple and Haji-Ali I bow my head to pay my respect and I too pray. In todays world we need to believe in all relegions and also we need to support all religions !

the Question here you said is Church fire is due to political motive from Congress ! the same thing you used to say church attacks in Karnataka during BJP rule ! If that is the why ruling govts can catch the culprits and funish them ? ! Why the peace loving community of Catholics pay this price ?
Jesus said you can slap me you can kill me I will forgive you, BUT if you destroy HOLY SPIRIT there is NO FORGIVENSS !
You can see that what happend BJP govt of Karnataka. some ministers lost thier life, some went to Jail, some ministers son in controvosies with girls- do you know why all this because? of they attacked and destroyed the HOLY SPIRIT !
in every chruch there is one small place is called Sacrament ( this is like Garba gudi of temple) this is holiest place is church, if that destoyed with intention then the curse will be on all people who done that and supported and procted them !

There is lot more happening at northern states by VHP / RSS.

Educated (assumption) majority elsewhere in India, thinks that minority christians are sheep and are not able to put 2*2 together.

Christianity is not a religion, it is a way of life, just as Hinduism is. Those who understand the humanity in each of these choose to practice it as a community.
Since they are human values, they are no threat to each other, because they all are based on humanity.

If someone is feeling the threat of humanity, that means, that person doesn't identify himself/herself with humanity.

Church is a place of gathering, praising the creator for the gift of humanity, organizing humane activities and helping people in need.

Education, medical facility, sanitation, social awareness - these are the activities christian missionaries are conducting. Why should anyone anywhere feel threatened.

But various comparisons - like how western world is accepting and allowing everyone to flourish under their roof, how christians have been nation developers not the destroyers - has not gone to the ears.

What more can be done. Pray to the creator to be merciful when his flock is hurt.

If broad minded majority community sincerely showed their maturity, things would not have come to this level.
BJP could take more than 500 seats in parliment, still the minority would have felt safe, accepted and happy, if at all.....

Most (all will be an exageration) of the fellows got wonderful education in christian started - managed institutions.
They grew in their respective fields and held respective positions and remained firm in their religious belief. Atleast, that must of gratitude should have remained with them. Gratitude is the largest ornament a human being can carry, and our majority brethern have lost that.

Humanity and goodness will prevail. May be... May be.. they will wipe out minority from India and create history which their future generations will be proud of. That is if there is a future.

But to understand the sarcasm and wisdom, one must have a generous attitude.

    jacinta,

whoever has done this heinous crime should be given strict punishment according to the law of land.

i also respect the contribution of christion schools in india.

but it does not mean that india was educationless before.it was india who imparted knowledge to the world initially several thousand years back.

sanskrit is the first organised language with accurate script from which all the languages of the world including european languages originated.

world first university is nalanda and taksshila university where students from all over the world came to gain knowledge.huen tsang, chinese scholar has documented it.

in between 800 years of mughal and british rule, india remained subdued.that does not mean indias history is limited to these 800 years.

india has several thousand years of glorious history where it was the dominating force in the world and actreasure trove of knowledge in all fields and was the richest country in the world.

finally, whoever has done this heinous crime should be punished by law of land with strict punishment.

untill then we cannot point fingers on any outfits of any community without any evidence.

no sane person in india including majority community supports this heinous crime and we hope the guilty is punished as fast as possible after a impartial investigation.

Cant you read properly and have some logical mind. Are you one of the "unpuds".
From the onset of the incidence the sequence of events have gone like this.
There was fire in the wee hours of morning of Tuesday.
Police were called because it was thought be case of arson.
Police came 3 hours late. Does it sound fishy or were they caught up in traffic?
Does kerosene and your cooking smell same?. Is it not the delay to evaporate the kerosene and its odour?
Archbishop asked Modi govt to put an enquiry into this.
Nothing was done.. till the sit in strike and parliament proceedings.
Then the SIT enquiry and other stuff was called.
Of course, this is "Shining India" example. May be it signifies "Burning India".
