Mangaluru, Dec 9: In the wake of several untoward incidents reported in the city and outskirts over the last few days following the clashes that erupted at Ulaibettu on the night of December 5, the city police commissioner recommended closure of all liquor shops between 6 pm and 6 am daily from Tuesday December 9 to December 11.

In media release, police commissioner R Hitendra stated that the step has been taken with a view to maintain law and order in the city and restore peace among the public. The order holds good for all liquor shops in all areas coming under the limits of the city commissionerate.

Based on the police commissioner's recommendation, under section 21(1) of Karnataka Excise Act 1965, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim has issued orders to prohibit the sale of liqour in all bars and restaurants and licensed wine shops throughout Mangaluru taluk, from December 9 to December 11, between 6 pm and 6 am. These three days have been declared as 'dry days' by the DC.

Accordingly, all places selling liquor, including shops will remain closed during the stipulated hours. The excise department has been directed to ensure that during these hours, the bars would display the department's seals on their doors.

The citizens have been urged to cooperated and follow the orders strictly. Those who violate the order, be it bar/wine shop owners or individual customers, will be dealt with severely and appropriate action would be taken against them, stated the press release.
