'Fandry', 'Liar's Dice' out of Golden Globe race

Los Angeles, Dec 11 (IANS): Acclaimed Indian films "Fandry" and "Liar's Dice", which were among the 53 motion pictures approved for Golden Globe consideration in the foreign language category, are not part of the final nomination list for the 72nd edition of the awards ceremony.

Nagraj Manjule's Marathi film "Fandry", revolving around an “untouchable” (Dalit) boy and his love for a girl from a higher caste, and Geethu Mohandas's "Liar's Dice", which tells the story of a young mother who takes her daughter in search for her missing husband, were among the most lauded films of 2014 in India.

While both films have been lauded at international film festivals, "Liar's Dice" happens to be India's official entry for the best foreign film category at the 87th Academy Awards.

A longlist, released on the official Golden Globe website recently, saw the two films in the run for a nomination each among films from Norway, Germany, Romania, France, Finland, China, Brazil, Greece, Canada, Argentina, Mexico, Turkey, Estonia, New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, Georgia, Austria, Ethiopia and others.

The final nomination list for the foreign film category now includes “Force Majeure” (Sweden), “Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem” (Israel), “Ida” (Poland/Denmark), “Leviathan” (Russia) and “Tangerines” (Estonia).

The entire nomination list were announced at a hotel here Thursday morning by actors Kate Beckinsale, Paula Patton, Peter Krause and Jeremy Piven.

The awards will be announced at a glittering ceremony Jan 11, 2015.
