Mangaluru, Dec 12: A person has been accused of dowry harassment by his wife.

It is said that the family of the husband demanded additional dowry, abused and tortured the woman besides driving her out of their house when she failed to bring in more dowry.

Shama Roshan, in a complaint filed in the women's police station here, stated that she had married a person named Shameer Sheikh at Shadi Mahal, Bolar in the city on June 5, 2010. As agreed upon between families, 20 sovereigns of gold ornaments, four golden rings, a foreign-made wrist watch costing Rs 15,000 and several other items were given to the groom's family during the marriage.

All the expenses connected with this marriage were met by Shama's father. After marriage, she started living with her husband at Alangaru Puttige near Moodbidri.

In course of time, she said, her husband, parents-in law and husband's sister, started torturing her mentallyby by telling her that the gold ornaments given in dowry were woefully inadequate. They started pestering her to bring 50 additional sovereigns of gold or Rs 3 lacs in cash from her parents, as her husband would have been offered 100 sovereigns of gold by any other family. She said her father-in-law also sold off 18.5 sovereigns of gold ornaments without her knowledge or permission.

Thereafter, the family was shifted to Landlinks Township in the city. There too she continued to suffer at the of her husband's family. She said she was then driven out of the house. On November 10, a threat to eliminate her parents was posed to her at the D Ed College in Balmatta in the city, Shama said in the complaint.

The police registered the complaint and took Shameer for inquiry.
