Mangaluru: Foundation laid for Minority Bhavan amid protests

Mangaluru, Dec 13: The foundation for district Minority Bhavan was laid at Pandeshwar here on Saturday December 13 amidst much chaos and protest.

The foundation was laid by district incharge minister Ramanath Rai and MLA J R Lobo in the presence of MLC Ivan D'Souza and deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim.

However, even as the foundation was laid, students and teachers of Kerala Samajam school, which is located opposite this spot, along with members of Adi Dravida Samaja Seva Sangha, arrived there and started to protest.

The Kerala Samajam school students and teachers said that the land where the foundation was laid was used by the school as its playground. The locals too said that it is the only playground in the vicinity, and is used by locals too.

At the same time, members of Adi Dravida Samaja Seva Sangha too protested, saying that the land being used to build the Minority Bhavan had been suggested for building a Samudaya Bhavan (community centre) for the Sangha.

General secretary of the Adi Dravida Samaja Seva Sangha Ramkumar P said, "This government land was for us. In fact we ourselves had shown this land to the district administration to build a community centre for us. Now the DC has turned his back on us and foundation has been laid for Minority Bhavan. We have been fooled."

He further said, "We had submitted so many memorandums urging to build community centre on this land, even during the time of BJP government, we had made similar request to the then district incharge minister C T Ravi."

Local corporator Diwakar said, "This land is being used as playground, but the government has already sanctioned Rs one crore for the Minority Bhavan. Before taking any step, the district administration needs to obtain no obejction certificate (NOC) from the MCC, but in this case the administration never approached the MCC."

Shivanna, a local, said, "This is the only playground in this area, there is no other place for children and youngsters to play. It is used by all locals."

The children of Kerala Samajam school too complained, "Students of this school have been using this playground for many years, now we won't have a place to play. If this land is taken away, we do not know what to do during games hour."

Police arrived at the spot and brought the situation under control.

Speaking to daijiworld, J R Lobo said he would study the matter thoroughly. "The land belonged to the revenue department and was reserved to build its staff quarters. In October, the DC earmarked this land for the construction of Minority Bhavan. I came to know about the foundation laying ceremony only yesterday. I will examine the matter carefully and look into the objections raised," he said.

If the govt. is so interested in building miniroty bhavan, why the same play ground used by the students and local residents. Let this building move to outskirts of Mangalore city.

I very strongly object this Minority Bhavan. Whether the school is Kerala Samaj or any other Samaj, we have to stop this type of NON Sense of Minority Bhavan.

This is only divides the people. No good at all.

The Kerala samajam private English medium school management, students and some vested interest outfits doesn't have any moral rights to protest against the govt approved minority bhavan to be constructed on govt sanctioned land. Minority bhavan will benefit not only Muslims other minorities like Christians, jains.parsis, bhudists also.
It is wonder how Kerala samajam private school obtained licence to run the school without having proper playground for their students. If they really interested to facilitate the playground for their students they can purchase their own land instead of trying to occupy the govt land and making disturbance by using their students and also politicizing and communalyzing the issue.
We wish to prevail the deep rooted historic peaceful coexistence and communal harmony in the society of coastal Karnataka.

First of all I don’t understand why it is named Minority Bhavan. Do the socalled “minorities” want this Bhavan? I don’t think it would serve the purpose of the people that is being built for, but certainly it does of our politicians. Secondly, the bhavan should be used for the people who are in need without reserving it for the minorities. Our politicians should know that there are lots of people in “majority” group are in need of the services that are offered to minorities. It would be unfair from the part of our politicians to show step-motherly treatment between our people.

Why the school was given permission to operate if they did not have adequate place for playground? It's revenue land and govt has the right to make use of it for its purpose! Just because school children are playing there, school cannot bar govt from using it for any other purpose! People who did not have problem when Community Bhavan was proposed there have problem now when Minority Bhavan is planned! When programmes and schemes are planned for Minority, it is they are termed as appeasement. But if schemes are planned for Majority, it is their Right! Minorities are not begging for favours from govt. But if the govt is giving something on its own, why anyone should frown? Govt's intentions are for them. But if the proposed scheme has any welfare in it, let it be so, whether it is for Minority or Majority!

What is the need of Minority Bhavan on Children play ground? There is no other land in Mangalore other than this land? Shameless politics, Mr. J.R.Lobo, should take decision in favour of School Children in this matter.

Wish local MLA and MLC cancel this project at the disputed site.

Govt. should at once stop this non sense issue like Minority Bhavan. Rather concentrate the funds for Infra structure, water supply etc which benefit all.
