Mangaluru: Overflowing manhole creates nuisance for commuters

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MD)

Mangaluru, Dec 18: Commuters travelling to KPT circle from Bejai on Thursday December 18 had to cover their noses because of the stench emanating due to the leakage of a manhole located in the middle of the road near Circuit House.

Two-wheeler riders had a tough time negotiating their way through the stretch, and some of them even slipped and fell. Pedestrians too had a horrible time.

Amusingly, the people who fell because of the mess did not complain to anybody. They just cleaned themselves up and disappeared from the scene after the free fall, as though they were not affected at all.

Some people were seen using the opposite side of the road for some time. But the people who did not have any clue about the leakage till they actually got to the scene silently suffered.

When contacted, Bejai corporator Lancelot Pinto said that the MCC officials rushed to the spot along with workers, and with the help of the jetting machine, cleared the overflowing manhole and sprinkled bleaching powder to clean up the area.

MCC officials were not available for comment despite several tries.

Considering the massive increase in population and the huge increase in construction in the no. of multistory buildings and other facilities, the sewerage, clean water supply system, broad roads should have been considered at least 5 years ahead of time to avoid such stinky disasters prone to spread deadly disease despite having wide experience from other big cities, Mangluru planners have failed in building a very liberal infrastructure to take care of future expansions like that has been done in planned cities like Navi Mumbai, Gurgaon, etc.!!

No pipe including our digestive system anywhere in the world will function properly if abused beyond a certain limit. Issue appears promptly fixed within a day what if it had taken a week? We need to educate and act ourselves to maintain our own sinks and toilets by not putting clogging items. I guess most problems are caused by tenants and idiots. I appreciate and encourage the speedy response of clearing the worst mess. Concerned should also look into overloads and monitor trouble shooting areas. We need more of doers than actors.

Dear friends, Please ask yourself before blaming any one, because how much care we take care of the sewage system. How many times we non dissolving things in the drain. Especially the sanitary napkins, every one is thinking that it will get washed out, but it's not. This is one of the example.Like that there are so many other things also.

When the world is progressing..when India produces the fastest BRAHMOS missiles..
Puts its mission on mars... when India produces the CRYO engine.. India has not mastered the art of building a Basic working TOILET.. build one straight clean road ... perfect with all side walk.. signage... lighting.. zebra crossing..?
where are the designs.. drawings.. standards and specs where is the quality ?
where is the city or the municipality..do we have any qualified engineers ..qualified builders ..is anyone following the standards if not who is responsible......where is the
    municipality or their engineers..
we cant build a neat sewage /drainage with concrete and also the flow or capacity.. the overall quality is BELOW ZERO..
There should be overhauling of entire municipality machinery...
top to bottom..They have no standards or any drawings or quality of construction..
Time for the JANTHA to take over the municipality and put the qualified engineers to take charge..since teh whole set up is CORRUPT.
look at the state manholes.. .sub standard construction.. there is no capacity.there is no gradient .BAD.BAD and very bad..disgusting...
Time for pvt professional cos to take over the city or municipality.
    look in Dubai..

This is the result of copying foreign countries half, half and pasting in India. If we can think and do the work that will always be perfect.

When the size of the drain pipe has been reduced from the original one that was designed but the cost has not then these incidents will keep happening every time it rains. Mangaloreans join together and call for CBI enquiry into this.

The sentence that reads:AMUSINGLY PEOPLE WHO FELL DID NOT COMPLAIN TO ANYBODY". Greatness of Mangaloreans, shows the true color. I do not want to shake the tree. But let someone do the shaking and I will eat ped fruits. This is why Mangalore is in this condition. People are electing the corporators without checking their background. He may be Women chaser, rowdy,or just looser but they vote and then cry why they did elect Him or Her. Sorry folks that you will be facing tough time in Mangalore. Tall building are coming up and their drainage plus roof water is connected to Sewer line which cannot carry the extra load. Tell the Corporation any problem and it will be like spitting in the wind. It falls on your face.
Without checking and changing the Pipes Cement is poured. Now they can order digging and make some more cash in pocket. Low lying areas of the City will face the brunt.

Sir, agree, with so many multistory buildings and complexes and many many more under construction with no commensurate increase in drainage/sewerage system, just imagine the state of affairs of Mangluru in another 5 years!!!
