Mangaluru: AI Express flight delayed by over a day, passengers stranded in Bahrain

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Dec 18: Passengers of Mangaluru-Bahrain-Kuwait flight are having a harrowing time, with Air India Express, the sole carrier on this route, facing techincal problems resulting in delays of more than a day.

The Air India Express flight IX889 left from Mangaluru to Kuwait via Bahrain on Wednesday December 17, but when it reached Bahrain, it developed technical snags, said Nagesh Shetty, station manager of Air India Express in Mangaluru.

The passengers were stranded as the flight had to be cancelled.

Twenty-nine passengers were flown to Kuwait by Gulf Air, while others were given accomodation in hotels in Bahrain. In the return flight, 70 passengers were supposed to fly from Kuwait to Mangaluru, and 101 from Bahrain, but the flight is yet to take off.

The flight was supposed to reach Mangaluru on Thursday December 17 evening.

Nagesh Shetty said that a team of engineers has been sent via Mumbai and Doha to Bahrain, and the flight is expected to be restored by Friday December 19 morning.

Meanwhile, sources said that some of the stranded passengers protested at Bahrain airport over the inordinate delay. Several passengers who were on their way to Mangaluru on vacation, festivals or to attend family functions were left with no choice but to wait.

Air India is one of the worst Govt Flights I have ever experienced. I would even rate Gulf Air better than Air India.
What are the selfish greedy ministers of India doing with the taxes they steal from us? Is there any development? Buying used aircrafts from other companies? Are we Indians that cheap?
Its time that the private airlines like Jet Ariways, Spice Jet etc from India start routes from Mlore to the Gulf and vice versa.
Air India Express should be stopped and no longer work on any routes to the Gulf.
Rather spend 100 BHD more and save ones life than using a unpleasant airlines like AIR INDIA

    Technical Problem!!?? Of course!!!
when you are using an old and used aircrafts from other airlines, surely technical problems are common..
Air India Express doesn't have enough fund to buy a new aircrafts!! they are just leasing the used Air Crafts from other airlines (European or Middle East)
I would never travel in this airlines...!!

It is becoming more clear AIExpress is not interested in operating Gulf Mangalore flights anymore. No point blaming the ministers because all airlines focus on lucrative routes for their survival. Rather than begging AirIndia, it would be more appropriate to pressurize the government to allow Private airlines to operate feeder routes. It will be more expensive but slightly better than the present cattle class.

    Dear Pinto,

For Safety measure, no other airlines interested to operate. There are still lack of safety measures. Which will be screened to the public and international aviation authority. Just wait n watch.

PASSENGER ON BOARD : The worst experience one can have travelling by Air India Express is been witnessed by the passengers travelling on Wednesday 17th December 2014 from Bahrain to Mangalore via Kuwait flight. The flight which was scheduled to take off at 11.15 am on Wednesday from Bahrain – Mangalore had landed Bahrain airport carrying passengers from Mangalore (Bahrain & Kuwait passengers)
While the Bahrain passengers were about to enter the flight it was understood by the passengers from aircraft authorities that there is minor water leakage in the toilet and it is not possible to board the flight for 2 hours. The passengers waited until 5.00 pm and there wasn’t any response from the aircraft authorities upon when the flight can be taken off to mangalore via Kuwait. It so happened that even the passengers who had come all the way from mangalore to travel Kuwait were also offloaded in Bahrain due to technical problems. At 5.00 pm it was understood that it is not possible to take off the flight as the technician along with spare part has to come from india and we were asked to stay at a hotel were it is not possible for the decent families to check in.
On 18th December 2014 all the passengers were asked to check out the hotel rooms at 6.00 am and we reached the airport at 7.30 a.m with promises that led to loose every passengers hope.

After reaching airport again it was understood that the flight is not ready to take off and there is again leakage encountered within. It was understood from the pilot who spoke to one of the passenger that the flight has major technical errors i.e kerosene leakage and because of safety reasons the pilot ignored to take off until it is being fixed appropriately. The pilot even said that every life is important and it lies in his hands and it is not possible to take risk. We have been then given soo many fake promises every half hour by the air india express authorities stating that everything will be will be fixed in every half hour but it wasn’t worth believing them. At 2.00 pm all the angry passengers held the air india country manager Mr. Bakka and didn’t allow him go un answered. Later as the airport is a sensitive area were we cannot fight more we had to accept the promise made by Mr. Bakka stating that alternative arrangements will be done and to be sent at 6.30 p.m flight via calicut but we lost all our hopes when it was heard from him at 6.00 pm that it is not possible for today again as it is not possible to divert the flight. Every passenger requested raising their voices to shift us to other flight as there were many who were carrying infants, some going for emergency, some going for weddings and some even for a weeks leave but our concerns were not accepted and it was just said that tomorrow i.e 19th December hopefully something will be done. All the passengers at the airport were threatened and asked to go to hotel rooms arranged. It is also understood by the aircraft offic

    except one thing
hiring the services of a plumber in Bahrain would have cost far less than to arrange one from Mumbai together with the cost of accommodating passengers in hotel

Irony is it took more the 36 hours before anyone from AI comes and explain us the situation. We were just wondering in the aiport looking at the TV screen for any status . AI staffs were just avoid facing us, disgusting behavior indeed. It's a horrible seen over here while many parents with small children and aged ones looking for someone to address them.

It's really sad. I agree that we can not avoid technical faults. But AI should have arranged for sending the passengers through other Airlines. To my surprise, Dubai Mangalore flights are not expensive this year. Reason is there is a competition by Jet Airways. So, let us urge the Government to allow other Airlines for Bahrain-Mangalore route. This kind of problems will not come up!

The same old Story.Nothing new.why only AI.having thechn.problem can anyone explain?second why they are operating a air trip when they dont have any personals to attend Problems at the spot?Any other airways solve Problems on the spot, and delays has to expect, send their passengers with other air lines or Hotels if they require. It is better to travel with bullock kart than in AI.nowadays.Does this Problem apply to other country also?does anyone know?for example,NY.or Canada, etc.?Our old prestigious AI,is no more good now.may be cheap rate but last have to pay hard for .

Mechanical failure can happen at any time and to any airline. When the flight is stationed in non home country it will normally take sometime to get fixed the problem .people need to understand that safety of passengers is very important .

Air carriers should have other alternatives. Few hours delay could be managed but delaying for more than 24 hours and putting passengers to inconvenience and still showing arrogance is not acceptable. If this happens to VIP's and Ministers Air carriers are ready to make immediate alternative arrangements but for a common man, despite charging exorbitant rates Air carrier management is always rude and non-cooperative.

It has been more than two years since our airport has been d as an 'International airport' and I wonder why no airlines other than AIE is operating in this sector. The very purpose for which this airlines gave birth as a subsidiary of AI to help the poor passengers of Gulf has completely been defeated and it is taking its passengers for granted in terms of ticket fare and otherwise (the return ticket to Doha-IXE sector today was more than 3000 QAR i.e about 50,000 INR). After reading the above news my suggestion to the AIE passengers is take a bed sheet and pillow with you if you ever wish to travel with AIE!
