Udupi, Dec 21: An incident of assault which had occurred in the town police station here has transformed into one of murder, as the person at the receiving end died due to injuries suffered in the incident.

Manjunath (25) used to work as a mason in Bengaluru. As he had turned a habitual drunkard and used to beat up his wife Meenakshi routinely, Meenakshi's brothers, Raviteja and Krishna, had visited Bengaluru and brought her to her parental home sometime back. Manjunath also came to the house of his in-laws in Adi Udupi here to take his wife back.

It is gathered that on December 12 afternoon, brothers-in-law of Manjunath attacked Manjunath with wooden stick and belt indiscriminately, as a revenge for the violence he had unleashed on their sister. Although Manjunath fell sick, he was not taken to hospital, as the family was apprehensive that policemen would come to know of the incident.

However, after Manjunath started vomiting on December 18, they were left with no alternative but to provide treatment to him. Therefore, they took him to a private hospital here, where they were advised to refer him to a hospital lin Mangaluru. When being taken to Mangaluru in an ambulance, Manjunath breathed his last, it is learnt.

The policemen observed that there were bruises and other injuries on the chest, right hand, head, neck, and ribs.

The accused were arrested later and produced in court.
