Bengaluru: Wearing of helmets may become mandatory all over state

Bengaluru, Dec 23: If the officials in the department of transport are able to convince the government to clear the proposal now put forth by them, wearing of helmets will become compulsory for two-wheeler riders almost all over the state.

At present, wearing of helmets is compulsory only within the limits of city corporations i e Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Dharwad, Mysuru, Davangere, Belagavi, and Kalaburagi.

Providing this information, transport commissioner, Rame Gowda, also said that the proposal mooted by his department also envisages stricter punishments for violation of this rule. It has been recommended to make it compulsory for pillion riders too to wear helmets, taking into account the fact that in most cases, pillion riders have been losing lives because of severe head injuries.

The new proposal plans to make it compulsory for two-wheeler riders within municipal limits, as well as on state and national highways all over the state, to wear helmets.

Rame Gowda said that from January 2015 onwards, his department will take up the work of spreading information about the ill-affects of not wearing helmets through advertisements, wall papers, banners, and other means.

    I don't know why the Transport Department is very much interested in making compulsory to wear helmets by the riders of two wheelers. The riders are only responsible for their lives. In fact Government only responsible for the accidents because almost all accidents are occurred because of non maintenance of roads. Therefore I request the Transport Authority to kindly stop the compulsion of wearing the helmets by two wheeler riders.
