Mangaluru, Dec 28: The 'Jana Samparka' programme relating to Suratkal assembly constituency was organized at Hotel Lalit International at Suratkal on Saturday December 27. Hundreds of beneficiaries under different schemes had gathered at the venue to collect their facilities.

Rajya Sabha member, Oscar Fernandes, speaking after initiating the meeting, advised the officials to solve most of the problems of the people at their offices, so that only remaining issues could be solved through such meetings.

Oscar handed over cheques representing chief minister's relief fund to beneficiaries.

In his introductory address, MLA, B A Mohiuddin Bava, said that out of 207 eligible persons under chief minister's special relief fund, 168 persons have already been given the cheques. He said Dakshina Kannada district stands first as far as performance under this scheme is concerned.

On the occasion, Tavarekere, a tank measuring 2.5 acres located in Suratkal Hosabettu, was handed over to Mangaluru Urban Development Authority for being developed into a public pool and park. Bava also said that the work of granting four sites to Mogaveera Mahasabha for fishing-related work, which was pending since the last five decades, had been executed during his term.

Bava gave a long list of achievements since he was elected as MLA, which includes grants to temples, churches, temples, plan to build Srinivas Mallya Bhavana, etc. BPL ration cards, pensions under various schemes of the state government, and relief amounts were among those which were handed over to the beneficiaries at the meeting.

The BJP had planned to wave black flags at minister for urban development, Vinay Kumar Sorake, holding him responsible for delay in appointing commissioner to Mangaluru City Corporation. The policemen had made elaborate security arrangements, in anticipation of trouble. However, after finding that Sorake abstained from the meeting, the corporators waved black flags, warned of resorting to stronger measures of agitations if the commissioner's appointment issue is not sorted out immediately, and dispersed.

Though a large number of people gathered in the hall from the Surthkal Hobli with their problems to be solved, district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai and State minister Vinay Kumar Sorake were absent for the Janasamparka programme. As such, a number of issues could not be settled.

People had come prepared with various problems but their appeals were not heard. Instead of providing the opportunity to people to be heard, the representative was busy in carrying out the benefit distribution work.

B K Imthiyaz of DYFI allegedly said, " Though so many people have come to narrate their problems and get remedies, there is no arrangement to hear their problems. Instead this programme has been organized for the sake of publicity and obviously not for the welfare of the people."
