Belagavi: After four days of intense search, man-eater finally shot dead

Belagavi, Dec 29 (DHNS): Sharpshooters late on Sunday shot dead the man-eater tiger which had been on the prowl in the forests of Khanapur taluk in the district for the last few days.

Belagavi Superintendent of Police, Ravikanthe Gowda, confirmed the incident.

A massive operation was launched four days ago after the tiger fatally mauled a pregnant woman. A few months ago, the tiger had killed a woman in the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary in Chikkamagaluru district, after which it was released into the forests in Belagavi district.

The spot where the tiger was killed is remote and deep in the forest. Poor mobile phone communication meant the incident could not be confirmed immediately.

‘Operation Tiger’ comprised forest and police officers as well as veterinary doctors, local residents, personnel of the Special Tiger Protection Force, sharpshooters from the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) as well as members of the Soliga tribe from Chamarajanagar district.

The ANF sharpshooters had been camping on a raised platform with a prey thrown down to lure the man-eater.

Earlier in the day, two tigers were spotted in Khanapur taluk but forest officials were unsure which was the one they were pursuing. One feline was spotted by people near Mudgai village where the man-eater had killed the pregnant woman.

The other tiger was spotted near Kabnal village. It became difficult for forest teams to identify which tiger is the man-eater as the radio collar fixed to it had gone defunct.

The government had authorised shooting down the animal which had preyed on a horse too. The operation to recapture it was described as the biggest such exercise after the offensive against the forest brigand, Veerappan, who was killed in October 2004.

not sure, if killing was a need. they could have shot it unconscious and then would have left to some forest or protested sanctuaries. Any ways, the local people may get relaxed as I could see it has killed many people. But still I feel they shouldn't have shot it dead...

Killing is not right solution. Every living animal has right to live. Tiger becomes maneater for his survival. Man kills Tiger for his survival. Humans should Live and let live other living beings.
If humans encroach on jungles then they should not blame the animals.
Instead of killing, it could have been captured and put in dense forest, its natural habitat. Human encroachment on the jungles must be prevented.

This man eating tiger could have been tranqualised and moved to a zoo or someother sanctuary. Excess conservation has led to over population of these magnificient and elusive cats. Over population leads to territorial fights between them. A few animals thus move outside their territory and stray into human habitations / villages. In Africa animals are officially culled / killed to stabilise the population. In India this is not done.

Wild life Sanctuaries are a national shame,a disaster perpetuated on nature.Tigers are confined to small areas of forest, which are constantly degraded, forest covers, destroyed every day, depletion of natural prey
brings about conflict between humans & animals. Humans have destroyed forests, damaged environment, which supports complex life on Earth, denigration of nature will cause ultimate destruction. Humans will survive only if nature is restored.

Very very sad... where is the place to survive for tigers in the earth now... everywhere developments going on... what wild animals should do? It ate human because of hungry, but has the tiger come to town and ate human, no. People went to its region, so it ate them.. nothing wrong in it. Instead of killing those wild animals, let them shift at some safety zoo. Oh.. tiger you have no place in this earth... God gives you a future birth as Tiger in no man land...RIP

They should not have killed this tiger. It could have been shifted to another forest in the different region away from its native.
